At the end of October 2011, Kartayev was hired by Lokomotive Yaroslavl to help rebuild the team after the plane crash on September 7, 2011. Two years later he moved to Metallurg Novokuznetsk in exchange for a right to vote for the KHL Junior Draft 2014 . In January 2014 this exchange was reversed and Kartajew played for Lokomotiv in the play-offs. After five years at Lokomotive, in which he completed over 230 KHL games for the railway association, he returned to Salawat Julajew Ufa in May 2019.
