The Yamango district is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on December 30, 1983. It has an area of ​​219 km². At the 2017 census, there were 8,862 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 10,522, in 2007 9978. The administrative seat is the 1175  m high village of Yamango with 1108 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yamango is 46 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Chulucanas .

Geographical location

The Yamango district is located in the north-east of the Morropón province. The maximum lengthwise extension in the WSW-ONE direction is around 29 km, the maximum width at around 13 km. The district extends over the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The area is mainly drained to the southwest over the Río Corrales to the Río Piura . Only the extreme northeast of the district lies in the catchment area of the Río Quiroz , left tributary of the Río Chira .

The district of Yamango borders in the southwest with the district Buenos Aires , in the northwest with the district Santa Catalina de Mossa , in the north with the district Chalaco , in the northeast with the district Pacaipampa ( province Ayabaca ), in the east with the district Lalaquiz ( province Huancabamba ) and in the south to the district of San Juan de Bigote .
