Zurich Derby (Soccer)

A Zurich Derby is a game between the two football clubs in the city ​​of Zurich , FC Zurich (FCZ) and Grasshopper Club Zurich (GCZ). On November 20, 1897, the first Derby between the two clubs took place on the occasion of the Swiss Football Championship 1897/98 . The Grasshopper Club won 7-2.

history

FC Zurich originally emerged from FC Turicum (Turicum is the Roman name of Zurich). After this merged with FC Excelsior, FC Zurich was founded on August 1, 1896. When the Grasshopper Club Zurich left the Swiss Football Association in 1909 , FC Zurich changed the club and jersey colors from red and white to blue and white, which were traditionally the colors of the Grasshoppers and the colors of the city of Zurich. This anecdote led to disagreements between the two clubs. As a result, the rivalry spread outside the football field. This was reinforced by the fact that the GCZ was supported more by the bourgeois class, while the FCZ was supported by workers and peasants, a social limit that only exists to a limited extent today.

According to the number of season tickets sold, FCZ fans are clearly in the majority in the city of Zurich, while GC has a strong base in the rich towns on the Gold Coast and in the agglomeration communities. In the rest of the canton, the supporters are more evenly distributed.

Historic victories

The first century of the Derby had some notable results. In the war of 1942-43 Championship 2 for the GCZ: achieved a double-digit result: 11th The highest FCZ victory in the 21st century dates from the 2011/12 season . The half-dozen goals of the FCZ were not matched by a single GCZ goal. Because the two clubs did not always play in the same league, it took 70 years until the 100th city derby. It took place on September 2, 1967 in front of 15,000 onlookers on the Hardturm. The Swede Ove Grahn , Roland Citherlet and Rolf Blättler scored the goals for the 3-0 victory of the GCZ.

Even in the 21st century there were some memorable games. The derby of March 3, 2004 in the Swiss Cup went down in history: After FC Zurich apparently led safely through goals by Daniel Gygax (3), Clederson César and an own goal by the Grasshoppers 5-2 after 82 minutes , the Grasshoppers succeeded three more goals to equalize 5: 5 in the last minutes of regular time. In extra time, Richard Núñez scored another goal for the Grasshoppers with a lift. Because the FCZ was subsequently denied a clear penalty, for which referee Urs Meier later apologized, this was the winning goal and GC moved into the cup final with a 6-5 victory, which it lost against FC Wil . On August 7, 2011, FC Zurich won 6-0 against GC in Letzigrund. With Aegerter , Alphonse , R. Koch , Mehmedi , Kukuruzovic and Nikci , six different players scored the goals. This is the FCZ's highest derby win of all time. In the 2014/15 season , the FCZ won all five matches, which neither club had ever achieved before. Another historic game in the Zurich Derby took place on November 29, 2015. Within 13 minutes, Yoric Ravet , Shani Tarashaj and Caio increased from 1-0 to 4-0 between the 58th and 71st minutes. In stoppage time, director Kim Källström ensured the final score of 5-0.

Shame of Zurich

The 226th derby on October 2nd, 2011 between GC and FCZ went down in history as the “Shame of Zurich”. The referee stopped the game after 77 minutes when the score was 2: 1 for GC. FCZ supporters left the guest sector shortly before, penetrated to the GC sector and threw a magnesium torch at the opposing fans. This was preceded by provocations from GC fans with FCZ flags stolen during a break-in. The game was later rated as a forfeit win for GC. Both clubs received a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs each. In addition, no spectators were allowed in the stadium during the direct encounter that followed.

Stadion

The stadiums of the two clubs - the Letzigrund of the FCZ on the border between District 4 and Altstetten and the former hard tower of the GCZ in District 5 - were very close to each other, only separated from the SBB railway tracks. Because of the rivalry, there were no players who switched "across the tracks" for decades. When, for example, the former Swiss national coach Jakob Kuhn moved from FCZ to the Grasshoppers, the anger was so intense that the midfielder involuntarily returned to his regular club after only two months. Even today, players who switch "across the tracks" are extremely unpopular at their ex-club.

Both stadiums should have been completely rebuilt, first the Letzigrund and then the Hardturm. The “new” Letzigrund was officially opened on September 23, 2007 with the 209th derby. FCZ won the game 4-0. The new Hardturm should have opened in 2008, but Credit Suisse, investor in the stadium, withdrew the project after years of legal dispute. Nevertheless, the Hardturm Stadium was demolished. Since then, the two clubs have played their home games in the same stadium (Letzigrund).

Another stadium project at the Hardturm was rejected by the Zurich electorate in 2013. A vote on a football stadium on the Hardturm area is to be held for the third time in autumn 2018 at the earliest. In the vote on November 26, 2018, 53.8% of Zurich's eligible voters were in favor of a new football stadium on the Hardturm site, for which the City of Zurich is granting favorable building rights and financing the 570 million Swiss franc project Cooperative settlement is carried out by private investors. The new stadium with 18,500 seats is to be the home of FC Zurich and the Grasshoppers and have continuous fan curves.
