Zara (formerly Koçgiri ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . Zara is about 72 kilometers by road (as the crow flies: 65 km) east-northeast of the provincial capital Sivas . According to the city seal, Zara received the status of a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1871 .
geography
Zara County is located in the center of the province. As an inland district, it only has neighboring districts from the province: Hafik in the west, Doğanşar in the northwest , Koyulhisar in the north, Suşehri in the northeast , İmranlı in the east, Divriği in the southeast and Kangal and Ulaş in the southwest . The district is between 2000 and 2500 m high. The highest mountains here are the Tekeli (2621 m), the Beydağı (2792 m) and the Gürlevik Dağı (2676 m). Zara belongs to the catchment area of the Kızılırmak .
The road ( Devlet yolu 865) D865 coming from Giresun on the Black Sea coast ends here after 213 kilometers. At the same time, the D200 ( E 88 ) trunk road crosses the southern part of the city and the district in an east-west direction .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of 135 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 87 residents. The scale of the population goes from 738 ( Korkut ) down to 10 ( Cemal ), 45 villages have 87 or more inhabitants (= average). The population density is below the provincial value, the urban population is 49.85 percent
