history

The village of Zella was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 1194 and was a pure day laborer village for over 700 years .

The Benedictine monastery founded in 1136 was destroyed during the Peasants' War and dissolved soon after 1550. Thereafter Zella remained a Fulda provost until secularization in 1802, which inherited the monastery including its rich property.

Zella was persecuted by witches in 1660 . Thomas N., "the sorcerer", got involved in a witch trial . Although he did not confess under the torture, he was sentenced to expulsion from the country.

On August 15, 1735, the baroque church "Mariä Himmelfahrt", built since 1715, was consecrated. Above the main portal is the coat of arms of the builder von Dalberg - six lilies and the cross of Fulda -.

After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Prussia received the Principality of Fulda and in the autumn of the same year left the offices of Dermbach (with the municipality of Zella) and Geisa to the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar . From 1922 to 1950 Zella, like the entire previous Dermbach office, belonged to the Eisenach district , from 1950 to the Bad Salzungen district and since 1994 to the Wartburg district.

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Zella / Rhön was incorporated into Dermbach. Before that she belonged to the administrative community Dermbach .
