Characters
Sonic Rivals 2 has the same original five characters from the original game and adds three new ones. All characters use Homing Attack and Spin Dash to move through the levels. Each character can also use a "signature move" by collecting Rings and filling the star gauge (formerly a powerup item in the first game).
Sonic Rivals 2 boasts a new "Battle Mode" with six different types of competition: Knockout, Rings Battle, Race, King of the Hill, Capture the Chao, and Tag. All of these modes are also woven into the story. The game also allows multiple players to play against one another with just one UMD (the first game required each player to have their own copy). The game also features a "Free Play" mode. Here players can take any one of the characters and play any level in traditional 2D Sonic fashion. This is a first for many of the characters featured.
*Sonic the Hedgehog: The fastest thing alive, Sonic's signature move is "Sonic Boom". This allows him to break the sound barrier in an instant and take off at high speeds. This move also destroys enemies and damages opponents.

*Miles "Tails" Prower: Sonic's friendly sidekick, Tails's signature move is high flight ability. He can quickly cover short distances and large gaps by flying.

Characters will divide into 4 teams:
*Rouge the Bat: A government spy with a jewel fetish, Rouge's signature move summons a swarm of bats to attack the other player.
