Sonic Rivals is a new game in the Sonic series, being created by Death, Jr. developers Backbone Entertainment exclusively for the PlayStation Portable.

It features 2.5D gameplay, as players scramble to reach the end of a level before the other players do (whether they are computer-controlled or live opponents). Presumably, it otherwise plays very much like the older titles in the series.

Sonic Rivals starts as a friendly competition between Sonic and Knuckles, but expands as further rivals get added to the mix.

Story

A friendly competition between Sonic and Knuckles heats up as Shadow and Silver. Things really get heated when Sonic and Knuckles find out that Dr. Eggman has turned Tails, Amy, and the Master Emerald into cards, and Silver and Shadow receive mysterious calls for help! Now, it's a madcap race to Dr. Eggman to find out what's going on, and to stop his card-creating antics!

Sonic the Hedgehog: This hedgehog is the fastest living thing in the world. He’s defeated Dr. Eggman to save the world numerous times, but in his latest adventure, Sonic discovers that his best friends Tails and Amy have been mysteriously turned into cards. Now’s it’s a race to find that evil Dr. Eggman and free his friends!

When Sonic gets a star power-up, he can use super-speed and run over enemies and hurt them, much like the dashing you can do in Sonic Rush.

Knuckles the Echidna: Having lived his whole life on Angel Island, Knuckles' existence is spent guarding the Master Emerald. He’s a wild, strong, tough, and all-around stubborn kind of guy and one may say, a rival to Sonic, perhaps due to Knuckles' longing to have a life of freedom like the hedgehog's. He must now race to find the Master Emerald that has mysteriously been turned into a card by Dr. Eggman!

When Knuckles gets a star power-up, he can punch the ground and make a giant explosion of fire and magma occur.

Shadow the Hedgehog: A black hedgehog that looks like Sonic. He was created as the ultimate life-form by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the greatest scientific genius of his time. Shadow has the power to use the Chaos Emeralds to perform “Chaos Control,” enabling him to manipulate time and space. Summoned to a strange land by Dr. Eggman via a cryptic transmission asking for his aid, Shadow encounters something strange and now it’s a race to find Eggman to uncover the truth!

When Shadow collects a star power-up, he can use Chaos Blast to hurt rivals and enemies around him.

Silver the Hedgehog: A mysterious young white hedgehog, equipped with psychic powers that allow him to propel items through the air with great force, is transported from somewhere. The only thing Silver really knows is that he is searching for someone…but for whom and more importantly why? Shrouded in mystery, Silver begins to run after Dr. Eggman to find the clues that will unlock his quest.

When Silver gets a star power-up, he can use his mind powers to make the other racers confused.

Unknown Character: In screenshot of the game's "character select" screen, it is seen that there is another playable character that is hidden by a question mark.[1] it could be Blaze the Cat, Metal Sonic or Jet the Hawk.

Supporting Cast

Dr. Eggman: The villainous Dr. Eggman returns again with yet another scheming plot. Apparently turning people and objects into cards, including Tails, Amy, and the Master Emerald, he ultimately brings Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver into a brawl as they go to find their friends, and to solve the mystery. Just what is the old doctor really up to, anyway?

Miles "Tails" Prower: Turned into a card by Eggman, it's now up to Sonic to rescue him!

Amy Rose: Turned into a card by Eggman, it's now up to Sonic to save his self-proclaimed girlfriend.

Courses

Waterfall Forest

A strange forest with terrain somewhat resembling Green Hill on South Island. This forest contains many waterfalls, and rivers that flow through it. This is the level shown at E3--a pic on SEGA's FTP site confirms the name. Waterfall Forest Concept Art 3

Desert Course

Thanks to a recent trailer there is also more unnamed courses.

You can clearly see an Ice Course, a Carnival Course, a Lava Course, a Haunted Course, and a Machine Course.

A recent four-page magazine article confirms that many of the courses are remakes of old levels--or at least, feature classic areas. Among them includes Hill Top Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog. Waterfall Forest may very well be the Green Hill Zone remake.

Cards

Besides the fact that Amy, Tails, and the Master Emerald have been turned into cards, there are also 100 tradable cards that you can collect throughout the game. These cards go from the rarity of common, uncommon, and rare. These cards aren't just tradable, though. Like Sonic Battle, you can use them to amp characters abilities. You can make Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver more powerful by adding cards to their stats.

In an interview with Gamespot UK, Takashi Iizuka revealed the following details about Sonic Rivals:

  • Gameplay is similar to classic Sonic games, but now, keeping with the Rivalry Theme, players can jostle, trip and shove opponents around.
  • There are 4 types of power-ups, Fire, Ice, Speed, and Star. The affects of each one are different for each character, though in general, the Fire power-up gives the characrer a fire attack, the Ice power-up gives the character a ice attack, the speed power-up gives the character a speed power-up, and the star power-up gives the character a special attack.
  • The game will feature a revamped power-up system, including both offensive and defensive abilities.
  • Singleplayer consists of a Story Mode, in which each of the four playable characters have separate storylines, and must race each other to the finish line in each stage in order to thwart Doctor Eggman's next scheme.
  • Multiplayer mode is played Adhoc, and players can customize their racers using collectable cards won in Singleplayer, trade cards with friends, and wager cards on races.
  • The first boss is likely be a giant turtle mecha similar to Sonic Rush as portrayed in screenshots on Sonic Stadium's website.

In a recent game testing, more information was discovered [2]:

  • Characters collect stars on the track used to level-up and attack opponents when enough stars have been acquired.
  • Different characters have different routes on the various tracks. {
  • Recent screen shots have shown that badniks will be featured as enemies, though some will be similar to those of Sonic Heroes. [citation needed]
  • A 5th playable character can be seen on the character select screen, though it's a mystery slot, so as of yet, the 5th character is unknown.
