Kate DeAraugo

Katherine "Kate" Jenna DeAraugo (November 5, 1985), is an Australian singer, and was the winner of the third season of Australian Idol in 2005. She was born to Portuguese migrants in Australia.

Australian Idol

A former swimming teacher, Kate DeAraugo had auditioned for Australian Idol, in both the first (2003) and in the second season (2004), but didn't manage to make it past the audition stage of the competition. After her first two auditions, DeAraugo travelled from Bendigo, Victoria to the Gold Coast, Queensland for singing lessons with Venetta Fields, finally moving to Queensland where she auditioned for the third season in (2005).

On November 14, 2005 she beat Lee Harding to ensure her place in the grand final. DeAraugo's co-finalist was Emily Williams, making this the first all-girl final since the Australian show began in 2003. Williams was generally considered the favourite but on November 21, 2005, DeAraugo was announced the winner of Australian Idol 2005 with the closest percentage in a finale yet. She is the only Australian Idol winner not to earn a single touchdown from judge Mark Holden.

Her father is a successful businessman, car dealer and semi-professional fisherman in her home town of Bendigo. He orchestrated a publicity campaign with "Vote for Kate" stickers and buttons appearing all over central Victoria.

2005-2006: A Place I've Never Been

A Place I've Never Been (2005)

As the winner of Australian Idol, DeAraugo was sent to the studio to work on her debut album which took six days to record[1]. She released her debut single "Maybe Tonight", on November 27, 2005 and with sales of 20,307 copies, it debuted at number-one and stayed there for two weeks[2]. It was awarded a platinum award by ARIA, and knocked off the top spot by third place winner Lee Harding with his debut single "Wasabi"/Eye of the Tiger". The single stayed in the top fifty for thirteen weeks and the music video was extremely popular on Australian music video shows such as Video Hits and Rage. In September 2006, "Maybe Tonight" was nominated for an ARIA Award for "Highest Selling Single", but lost to "Flaunt It" by TV Rock.

DeAraugo released her debut album A Place I've Never Been on December 12, 2005 through Sony BMG, her album debuted at number ten on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart with 15,600 copies sold in its first week[3]. The album stayed in the top fifty for eight weeks and on the chart for nineteen weeks. It was certified platinum in its first week. DeAraugo's second single "Faded" was released on February 19, 2006 and was co-written by Australian pop-rock duo The Veronicas. "Faded" debuted at number eight on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and number three on the Australasian charts, the single stayed in the top one hundred charts for twenty-four weeks. DeAraugo reportedly planned to release "If This Is Love" as the third single from her debut album, but this never eventuated.

Young Divas (2006)

DeAraugo joined three other Australian Idol contestants including Emily Williams, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Paulini Curuenavuli for a national tour. To promote the tour, the four released a cover of the Donna Summer hit classic "This Time I Know It's for Real" under the name Young Divas. This single was released on May 6, 2006 and proved to be a success debuting at number seven and peaking at number two, the single went platinum had been in the top thirty charts for twenty-two weeks. Originally a music video was not to be included but after much demand and the popularity of the single, a music video was released. They appeared on television shows such as Sunrise and the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars to also promote the single and tour. 'The Young Divas' tour has been extremely popular and more shows had to be added than originally planned.

Since the single and tour has been so popular, the Young Divas recorded an album of remakes of classics from around the world. Young Divas, their self-titled debut album, was released on 18 November, 2006, and debuted at number four on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart. Their second single "Happenin' All over Again" (a cover of Lonnie Gordon's disco classic) peaked at number nine. The four women stated many times that they will also keep their solo careers and DeAraugo announced in Australian magazine Woman's Day that she was currently working on her second solo album.

DeAraugo and her fellow Divas then recorded a song called "2000 Miles" for the compilation album Home: Songs of Hope & Journey by various Australian artists to raise funds and bring attention to beyondblue, an Australian initiative against depression. For this campaign DeAraugo gained Honorary Membership of The Coterie in the 2007 membership list. On June 22 2007 it was announced that Ricki-Lee Coulter had decided to leave the group in order to focus on her solo career, but DeAraugo and her fellow two remaining bandmates stated that they would carry on with their plan to record a second album, which they hoped to release in November of the same year.
