action

On January 8th, Tom Hansen meets Summer Finn, his boss's new assistant. Tom studied architecture, but works as a greeting card designer in Los Angeles .

After a company karaoke evening, Tom's work colleague McKenzie finds out that Tom is attracted to Summer. Summer and Tom get closer over the next few months. Summer initially tells him that she doesn't believe in "true love" and that she doesn't want a real boyfriend.

Tom shows Summer his favorite place in Los Angeles. It's a park bench that has a view of an array of buildings that he likes, even if they are surrounded by a few parking garages. A couple of weeks later, on a date, Tom becomes involved in a scuffle that was triggered by Summer. This triggers their first argument.

On Day 290, Tom and Summer break up with each other after watching the movie The Maturity Exam , a movie that means a lot to Tom. Tom is not coping well with the breakup, and his friend calls his younger sister Rachel to calm him down.

Summer quits her job at the greeting card company, and Tom's boss points out to him that while his depression he should rather design cards on sad occasions.

Months later, Summer and Tom are invited to a wedding. They meet on the train, start talking and later dance together. Summer even catches the thrown bridal bouquet. As they sit next to each other, Summer invites him to a party in their apartment. Tom hopes for a lot from this invitation, but is ignored by Summer. After seeing Summer show her engagement ring to a friend, he leaves the party.

Tom falls into a deep depression and only leaves his apartment to buy food and alcohol. After a few days he shows up at work drunk and quits. He resolves to go back to work as an architect and begins applying and interviewing.

On day 488, he meets Summer at his favorite place, the park bench, where they talk about their relationship. He wishes her marriage and life all the best. When he was invited for an interview in an architect's office twelve days later, he met a woman who was also waiting for the interview. Before he goes to the office, he asks her if she would like to have coffee with him afterwards. When he asks her name, she replies Autumn ('autumn').

The frequent jumps in the chronology of the relationship between Tom and Summer are introduced with short animations in which one sees a tree in its different annual vegetation phases and the number of the day on which the following action took place. The expulsion is symbolic of the beginning of the relationship or the emergence of Tom's first feelings for Summer; the leaf fall accordingly for the end.

criticism

"The film convinces with its good actors and the careful, imaginative staging, which cleverly uses the cinematic means from split screens to musicals, without them becoming an end in themselves."

“One of the great achievements of the film, however, is that it knows how to keep the balance between drama and comedy without becoming superficial or adopting destructive-pessimistic attitudes. [...] Webb's leadership and the light, inconspicuous and harmonious interplay of different stylistic elements give the film an unpretentious charm that knows how to emotionally involve the audience.
