The 1st Division 2001 was the tenth season of the second highest Russian league in football. It started on April 1, 2001 and ended on November 1, 2001.

The league was reduced to 18 teams. They played against each other twice on a total of 34 match days, divided into a first round and a second half. The two best teams rose to the Premjer League in 2002 , while the last three clubs were relegated to the third-class 2nd division .
