The first division in 1992 was the first season of the second highest Russian division in football after the end of the Soviet Union . It began on April 25, 1992 and ended on November 1, 1992.

A total of 52 teams were divided into three zones. In the west and middle groups 18 clubs each and in the east group 16 clubs. The teams competed against each other twice in a round trip. The three group winners rose to the top division in 1993 . The last three (eastern group two) teams relegated to the third class 2nd division .
