3 Days to Kill ( German : 3 days to kill ) is an American - French action - thriller from director McG from the year 2014. The main role of Ethan Renner took over the American actor Kevin Costner .

action

In the Hotel Jugoslavija in Belgrade (Serbia), the team around the aging CIA agent Ethan Renner is supposed to catch the albino while selling a bomb in order to get to his client, the wolf . The wolf , whose face is unknown, is one of the most wanted terrorists in the world. After the buyers of the bomb have been eliminated, the agents fail and the albino escapes as a result of a staged explosion by the terrorists .

After his return, Renner, who had a persistent cough, learned from a CIA doctor that he had a brain tumor that had already metastasized to other organs and that he had only three to five months to live and would therefore miss Christmas. He wants to spend the short remaining time with his daughter Zoey in Paris. Since Ethan's ex-wife Christine is of the opinion that Ethan has neglected his fatherly duties long enough and she has to go to London for a few days because of a business meeting , Zoey hands her over to her father. Ethan promises Christine not to kill people for the CIA anymore.

The young agent Vivi proposes a deal to Ethan: if he can kill the wolf within three days, she will give him an experimental drug that can prolong Ethan's life despite his illness. Since Ethan thinks he has nothing to lose, he takes it. Vivi then gives him the first injection.

Renner locates the Albino accountant's chauffeur and interrogates him. He can then kidnap the accountant. The interrogations are repeatedly interrupted by calls from Zoey, with whom Ethan wants to spend more time and whom he gets closer to. As a result, he is under time pressure to carry out the assignment. He also fights against the side effects of the drug such as dizziness and hallucinations.

During a chase through Paris, Renner can ram the car with the wolf and the albino over a parapet. Renner catches the wolf in a subway station , but has another attack of dizziness. He is overwhelmed by the albino , but at the last moment he can push him in front of an incoming subway. The wolf escapes again.

At Zoey's graduation party it turns out that the wolf is the business partner of the father of Zoey's friend Hugh. In a shootout, Renner can take out the wolf's bodyguards . The wolf crashes in an elevator after Renner destroyed its fortifications and survives seriously injured. Vivi arrives and tells Renner to finish his assignment. But he remembers his promise to his ex-wife and does not shoot the wolf ; Vivi does this in the end.

Vivi also informs Renner that the drug apparently worked. At the end of the film, Renner and his family can celebrate Christmas in a house on the coast. He receives a package from Vivi that contains another syringe as a Christmas present.

reception

On Rotten Tomatoes , only 28% of 111 rated reviews were positive in their judgment. The overall consensus on the site is: " 3 Days to Kill insecurely mixes tech- savvy action sequences with an underdeveloped family conflict ." Metacritic found a score of 40% based on 30 reviews.

James Berardinelli criticized the scenes between Kevin Costner and Hailee Steinfeld on reelviews.net as "artificial, annoying and boring". There is “not a single human moment” in the whole film. In the scenes with the “bizarre, absurd” Vivi, a bit of “crazy humor” can be seen, but Costner, who in Berardinelli's opinion did not see 3 Days to Kill as a comedy, played “so dark and serious” that he played the film drive out any fun.

Frank Scheck described the film in the Hollywood Reporter on February 20, 2014 as an “absurd combination of action, humor and sentimentality”, but praised the portrayal of Costner, who did everything with a “dry, humorous flair”. 3 Days to Kill is "absurd" and reminds "of a typical Besson"; However, he was "also undeniably entertaining".

The criticism of Cinema was again completely negative . The film is "presented like an action thriller", but turns out to be an "embarrassing family comedy whose running gag" consists of Costner cycling through Paris as a terminally ill CIA killer on a purple ladies bike. " The magazine found it regrettable that “there is no serum against such lousy scripts” and asked how this “godless nonsense” had made it to the cinema.

Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts found that the "crude spy story in the style of tough, paranoia-soaked 70s cinema" was "bumpy and never credible for more than 30 seconds at a time", but was still fun "thanks to a great Kevin Costner" . This is "the undisputed star and the soul of the film", while Hailee Steinfeld at his side shows "a solid performance", but embodies "the decidedly less conspicuous role". On the other hand, Amber Heard is allowed to "let it rip with pleasurably undecent overacting". The desired combination of a "detached agent thriller [s]" with a "personal family story" fails, however, "over long stretches because both elements are too often in each other's way".

The film service ruled: “A synthetic agent thriller that mixes subjects and pitches without any tact and crushes the plot under a jumble of sentimentality and tasteless brutality. The sovereign demeanor of the main actor stands out all the more. "

Gross profit

The film budget was about 28 million US dollars . Worldwide revenue was approximately $ 52.6 million.
