Amandus Augustus Abendroth
Amandus Augustus Abendroth (born October 16, 1767 in Hamburg ; † December 17, 1842 there ) was a Hamburg senator , Ritzebüttel bailiff and mayor of Hamburg since 1831 .
Life
Amandus Augustus Abendroth is the son of the notary and court procurator Abraham Augustus Abendroth from Scheibenberg and of Johanna Maria Groot, who was born in Bargteheide . His mother died a few weeks after he was born. He studied in Erlangen and Göttingen Law and received his doctorate in 1790 in Göttingen for Doctor of Law . On October 6, 1792, he married the sister-in-law of his friend and later Senate colleague Johann Heinrich Bartels Johanna Magdalena von Reck (1773-1854) in Venice ; both had nine children. The eldest son August Abendroth also became a lawyer and was a patron of the arts. Another son was the future citizenship deputies Carl Edward Abendroth .
At the age of 28 he became head of the u. a. General Poor's Institution initiated by Caspar Voght and elected to the Senate in 1800. During the French occupation he worked as a bailiff in Ritzebüttel . In 1811 the French brought him back to Hamburg as Mayor . On February 24, 1813, a spontaneous popular uprising against the French occupation broke out. After the Danish military, who had been called in for help from neighboring Altona, was beaten down, Abendroth organized a vigilante group, recruited from the Hamburg merchants, to prevent future looting of wealthy citizens' homes. When the French returned in June 1813, he was relieved of his duties and replaced by Friedrich August Rüder . During the exile by Napoleon in 1813/14, he wrote the reform writing Wishes at Hamburg's Rebirth .
He founded the North Sea resort of Cuxhaven in 1816 and was the first police officer in Hamburg from 1821. In 1799, Abendroth was admitted to the Freemasons Association, and in 1820 he was made Honorary Grand Master of the Hamburg Freemason Grand Lodge Loge d'Hambourg (today Absalom zu den Drei Netteln ). With the idea of motivating people to help themselves, he founded the Hamburger Sparkasse in 1827 . In 1828 he became landlord in Hamm and Horn , in 1830 the oldest landlord in the Geestland , and Martin Hieronymus Schrötteringk became the second landlord . On July 29, 1831, Amandus Augustus Abendroth was re-elected Mayor of Hamburg . Until his death he also served as the highest school overseer (protosolarch).
In 1834, Abendroth bought a park laid out in 1805 by Joseph Ramée in what is now the Hoheluft-Ost district and had it renewed by the garden inspector of the botanical garden at Dammtor, Johann Heinrich Ohlendorff . In addition to numerous plants, there were also several greenhouses : an orangery , a large and a small pineapple house and two wine houses.
Abendroth died in 1842 after a long illness and was buried in the Hammer Cemetery, which is now a listed building , at the Trinity Church in Hamburg-Hamm .
