Karl Emil Friedrich Gustav Adolf von Schell (born June 10, 1837 at Haus Rechen , † October 10, 1888 in Obermais , Tyrol) was a Prussian major general and commander of the Guard Field Artillery Brigade .

Life

origin

The von Schell family was an old soldier family, the line of which begins in 1325. They were first found in southern Germany and since the Seven Years' War also in Prussia. Adolf was a son of the Prussian Premier Lieutenant Friedrich von Schell (1810-1849) and his wife Auguste, born von Gillhausen (1809-1884). His brother Otto (1835–1902) rose to lieutenant general .

Military career

Schell visited the cadet houses in Bensberg and Berlin . He was then transferred to the 8th Artillery Regiment of the Prussian Army on May 1, 1855 as a characterized Portepeef Ensign. For further training he graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School from October 1855 to July 1858 , advanced to extra-budgetary secondary lieutenant in early January 1857 and was transferred to the Guards Artillery Regiment on November 5, 1857 . With a patent from January 1, 1857, on October 19, 1858, he was appointed artillery officer. During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Schell was assigned to an ammunition column in 1859. On October 1st, 1861, he was entrusted with running the business as a fireworks lieutenant for the Spandau Fortress . From October 1, 1861 to July 1, 1864 he was adjutant of the III. Department in the Guards Artillery Regiment, rose to Prime Lieutenant in mid-May 1865 and was appointed Regimental Adjutant on October 1, 1865. In this capacity, Schell took part in the battles at Thrush , Queen's Court and Königgrätz during the war against Austria in 1866 and received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his work .

After the war he was appointed adjutant of the 15th Division on May 23, 1867 . Schell was promoted to captain on August 22, 1867 without a patent . The patent of August 22, 1864 for his rank was awarded to him on March 10, 1868. In mid-July 1870, he returned to service as a battery chief in the Hessian Field Artillery Regiment No. 11 . At the beginning of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , at the end of July 1870 he initially worked as an adjutant at the General Government on the Rhine. On August 22, 1870 he became General Staff officer with Lieutenant General von Bothmer, then with General von Gayl. Schell took part in the battles near Diedenhofen , Verdun and Saint-Quentin . On January 11, 1871, he was assigned to the High Command of the 1st Army as a general staff officer . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , after the Peace of Frankfurt on May 27, 1871, he was aggregated to the General Staff of the Army and transferred to the General Staff . On October 3, 1871, he was promoted to major in the General Staff.

From October 1, 1872 to July 31, 1875 he was a teacher at the War Academy . During this time he was assigned to the War Ministry on May 6, 1874 for six months and in late summer 1874 took part as an observer in the maneuvers of the Austrian Army . On June 22, 1875, he was transferred to the 1st Hanover Field Artillery Regiment No. 10 as commander of the II. Division, where he remained until July 31, 1875 at the disposal of the Chief of the General Staff. Schell was transferred to Wesel on March 13, 1877 as commander of the 1st Westphalian Field Artillery Regiment No. 7 and promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 22, 1877 . On December 10, 1878 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the General Inspection of the Artillery . Schell was promoted to colonel in mid-September 1881 and was commander of the Nassau Field Artillery Regiment No. 27 in Mainz from November 12, 1881 to May 25, 1883 . He was then appointed commander of the 11th Field Artillery Brigade , with a position à la suite . This was followed in November 1884 as commander of the Guard Artillery Brigade in Berlin and from mid-December 1884 he was also a member of the examination committee for captains and prime lieutenants of the artillery. In addition, Schell was active from October 12, 1886 as a member of the study commission of the War Academy and from the end of February 1887 as a member of the commission for the examination and determination of field service regulations. He rose to major general on May 14, 1887 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords, on September 19, 1888. Schell died on October 10, 1888 in Obermais, where he had retired to recover from illness, and was buried on October 16, 1888 in the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin.

Schell married Emma von der Lancken (* 1846), a daughter of Major Friedrich von der Lancken , on September 29, 1863 in Polish-Jägel . The son Friedrich (1864–1866) emerged from the marriage.
