Ahl Männer, aalglatt ( Kölsch for "old men, aalglatt") is the sixth studio album by the Cologne rock band BAP . It was released by EMI Electrola in 1986 and was number one in the German album charts from February 14 to April 3, 1986 .

background

For the first time in the band's history, Reinhold Mack, a professional producer, was brought in for the recordings. Mack had his first international success as a producer or co-producer of Queen and Billy Squier in the early 1980s and was a sound engineer at ELO from 1975 . The recordings for the album were accompanied by a number of internal quarrels that ended with the departure of the drummer Jan Dix . This was replaced during the sessions by the studio musician Curt Cress .

The album was dedicated to the writer Heinrich Böll, who died a year earlier .

Ahl men, slippery tour

On March 2, 1986, the Ahl Männer, aalglatt tour began in Lohmar near Cologne . The drummer Jan Dix , who left before the album was even finished, was replaced on the tour by the new British Pete King . BAP first played a few concerts in rural areas before the band appeared on March 15, 1986 in Essen's Grugahalle at the 17th and final Rocknacht of the WDR- Rockpalast . The rock night, at which Jackson Browne and Big Country also appeared, was broadcast via Eurovision by many European radio and television stations, as was the case at the Loreley Festival in 1982. BAP's complete Rockpalast appearance was released in 2008 on the DVD BAP - Rockpalast: Grugahalle, March 15, 1986 .

Numerous other concerts followed from April to July. Due to the continued popularity, larger halls were selected in some cases. The “home games” of the Cologne band took place for the first time in the Cologne sports hall, which could hold up to 8000 spectators, and was then the largest event hall in the cathedral city. On this tour there was Christian Schneider for the first time - apart from Axel “Fisch” Risch, who replaced Steve Borg, who had broken fingers on the previous tour - a guest musician on a tour because the sometimes very complex keyboard arrangements of the new album were live would not have been possible with just one keyboard player. In addition to keyboards, Schneider also played the saxophone on some pieces. Christian "Kalau" Keul, who played various wind instruments, also accompanied the band.

After the tour ended in 1986, BAP took a creative break. a. due to internal artistic differences of opinion.

Individual evidence

  1. Text in the inlay : “There are old men // who are slick and there are young men // who are all slick • There are old men // who are young and outwardly young people // who are mentally pitifully petrified • - What I do want to get out? → Heinrich Böll died on July 16, 1985 • He was anything but slippery and with absolute certainty would never have become 'old' in this sense • Whether it is particularly appropriate or not // we want to dedicate this record to him ◼︎◼︎◼︎ "
