Alatyr ( Russian Алатырь , Chuvash Улатӑр / Ulatăr , Mordvin Ратор Ош / Rator Osh ) is a city in the Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District in Russia . It is the administrative seat of Alatyr Rajons and has 38,203 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Alatyr is located about 800 km southeast of Moscow and about 195 km southwest of the republic capital Cheboksary on the left bank of the Sura at the mouth of the Alatyr River .
history
In 1552, Tsar Ivan the Terrible had a fortified settlement built at the mouth of the Alatyr River to protect the borders of the Moscow Empire . Alatyr has been the county seat since 1780.
In the city there was a prisoner of war camp 463 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

Economy and Transport
Alatyr owns a locomotive repair shop. Other important branches of industry are machorka and shoe manufacture as well as electrical appliance manufacture. The city lies on the Penza - Kazan railway line and has a river port on the Sura and an airfield.
Attractions
The city is a center of Russian Orthodoxy in Chuvashia ; Numerous historical sacred buildings testify to this , among many others the St. John's Church (Иоанно-Предтеченская церковь, 1703), the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (Богородице-Рождественский , strong, Trinity , founded in 1747 ; Trinity собор, in 1747 ; ) and the Nicholas Monastery (Николаевский монастырь, founded in 1634). In addition, numerous streets with buildings from the 19th to early 20th centuries have been preserved in the city center.
