Albrecht Fabri ( pseudonyms : Karl Albrecht , Albertine Charlus , Otto Rodenkirchen , Arnold Fernberg, born February 20, 1911 in Cologne as Albrecht Schmitz; † February 11, 1998 ibid) was a German writer .

Life

After graduating from high school in Cologne-Nippes , Albrecht Fabri studied German , philosophy and musicology at the universities in Cologne and Bonn . During this time he belonged (with Max Bense and his classmate Erwin Bücken, among others ) to the “ Rheinische Gruppe ” of progressive artists around Goswin Peter Gath . After dropping out of his studies in 1934 and moving to Munich, Fabri worked as a freelancer for the “ Hochland ” magazine and radio in Munich . From 1939 “simple soldier, then Ia-clerk (without rank) in a division staff”, he took part in the Second World War and was a prisoner of war in Astrakhan until 1946 . From 1947 to 1956 he was a teacher at the German bookseller school in Rodenkirchen (since 1975 Rodenkirchen ), then for a year head of a writing workshop at the College of Design in Ulm . From 1956 to 1969 he was a freelance editor at Karl Rauch Verlag in Düsseldorf and from 1968 to 1970 at Limes Verlag in Wiesbaden . As a freelance writer , he contributed to cultural magazines such as Merkur and Sprache in the technical age as well as to radio and television, especially for West German radio . Since 1947 friends with the art dealer couple Stünke, he gave numerous speeches at the opening of exhibitions in their gallery Der Spiegel in Cologne and wrote texts for catalogs and graphic portfolios. This resulted in friendly relationships with a number of important artists such as Max Ernst , HAP Grieshaber , Horst Antes and Hann Trier .

Albrecht Fabri's work includes essays , short prose and aphorisms , as well as translations from English , French and Dutch .

Fabri had been a member of the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1967 and an honorary member of the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 1996 . In 1953 he received the Literature Prize of the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft in the Federation of German Industry and in 1991 the Wilhelm Heinse Medal of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature .

Fabri was married to the photographer Johanna (Hanni) Schmitz-Fabri (1925–1992) from Rodenkirchen. The marriage took place before Fabri had officially replaced his very common maiden name Schmitz with the artist name Fabri by changing his name. In his second marriage he was with Ingeborg Fabri, geb. Müller (born May 5, 1926 - December 1, 2000) married. She was (with Martin Weinmann) editor of the publishing house in February 2000 Zweitausendeins under the title The dirty thumb published collected works Fabris.

Fabri lived in the house in Baden Trajanstrasse since the 1960s . 10 (apartment 410) in Cologne. In the evenings he could often be found in the opposite corner bar Soenius ( Ubierring 58), where artists from the Cologne Werkschulen (Ubierring 40) such as Jürgen Hans Grümmer , Stefan Wewerka and Dieter Kraemer , actors from the Kammerspiele in the old building of the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum (Ubierring 45) like Kaspar Brüninghaus and art writers like Walter Vitt and Georg Jappe , but also the Federal Minister Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski , who also lives in Haus Baden . After his second marriage, Fabri moved to his wife at Luxemburger Strasse 426, where he rented a second apartment in the house for himself.

Fabri died in 1998 a few days before his 87th birthday. The grave of the Fabri couple is in Cologne's southern cemetery (hallway 20 no. 176l + m).
