Aleksander Jan Hall [ ˌalεkˈsandεr ˈjan ˈxal ] (born May 20, 1953 in Danzig ) is a Polish historian, former conservative politician and previously a dissident .

Life

Already during his visit to the Gdańsk Nicolaus Copernicus Lyceum , Aleksander Hall was active in the opposition by destroying posters of the ruling United Workers' Party and distributing leaflets with his classmates Grzegorz Grzelak and Arkadiusz "Aram" Rybicki . 1971 to 1972 he belonged to the educational group around Ludwik Wiśniewski . After graduating from high school, Hall studied history at the University of Gdansk between 1972 and 1977 and then worked as a history teacher.

In 1977 he was one with Leszek Moczulski and Andrzej Czuma the founders of the Movement for Defense of Human and Civil Rights ( ROPCiO ) and founded in 1979 u. a. with Arkadiusz Rybicki and Marek Jurek the youth organization Ruch Młodej Polski . In August 1980 he took part in the strike in the Gdańsk Lenin shipyard, became a co-founder of the NSZZ "Solidarność" and from 1981 an advisor to the Solidarność chairman Lech Wałęsa .

After the declaration of war on December 13, 1981 , he went into hiding and worked in the secret resistance until the amnesty in July 1984 , among other things as a publisher of the samizdat "Polityka Polska". From 1985 to 1987 he belonged to Lech Wałęsa's closest advisory group, along with Grzegorz Grzelak, Lech Kaczyński , Jacek Merkel and Arkadiusz Rybicki, and in 1989 took part in the negotiations at the “Round Table” . At the end of the 80s he also published in the weekly newspaper of the Catholic intelligentsia " Tygodnik Powszechny ".

After the political change, Aleksander Hall became Minister without Portfolio in the Mazowiecki Cabinet in autumn 1989 (until 1991 ). From 1991 to 1993 he was a member of the Sejm for the first electoral term, where he initially represented the Democratic Union , of which he was co-founder and temporarily vice-chairman in 1990 . In December 1992 he was the founder and then chairman of the Conservative Party . After this party in 1997 was merged with the Conservative People's Party (SKL), Hall was until 1998 and again 2000 - 2002 Chairman of the latter. In 1997 he was re-elected to the Sejm (third electoral term) for the electoral alliance electoral action "Solidarność" and in 2001 left parliament. In 2000 he was one of the founders of the Civic Platform (PO), but left the party shortly afterwards.

In 1996 he married the teacher and politician Katarzyna Hall , who later became Minister of Education in the Tusk I cabinet and from 2011-2015 also a member of the Sejm. He received his PhD in 2004 and continues to work scientifically. Among other things, he was a lecturer at the private Józef Tischner European University in Kraków and, since 2002, at the University of Information Technology and Administration in Rzeszów , where he became a full professor.
