Alexander Varshavsky
Alexander Varshavsky ( Russian Александр Яковлевич Варшавский ; born November 8, 1946 in Moscow ) is a Russian - American biochemist and professor at the California Institute of Technology .
Life
Varshavsky earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Moscow University in 1970 and a Ph.D. for biochemistry at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow. From 1973 to 1976 he was a research assistant there. In 1977 Varshavsky emigrated to the USA, where he initially took on a junior professorship in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1977 Assistant Professor , 1980 Associate Professor ) and became a full professor in 1986. In 1992 he moved to the California Institute of Technology , where he is Howard and Gwen Laurie Smits Professor of Cell Biology .
Act
By means of genetic studies on yeast and cell cultures of higher organisms, Varshavsky was able to elucidate numerous meanings of the ubiquitin system in the breakdown of proteins according to the N-End Rule , which play an important role in the cell cycle , in apoptosis , in malignant transformation , inflammation regulation and the immune response plays.
