Alfons Nowack

Alfons Maria Adalbert Nowack (born August 8, 1868 in Groß Strehlitz , Upper Silesia , † March 13, 1940 in Breslau ) was a German regional historian and archivist and director of the Archbishop's Diocesan Archives in Breslau.

Life

His parents were Anton Nowack, a postal worker in Groß Strehlitz, and Hedwig Nowack, née Wontrobka. He attended elementary school and graduated from the Königliche Johanneum Gymnasium in Groß Strehlitz in 1887 with a secondary school leaving certificate. In 1887 he began studying theology at the University of Breslau and attended the lectures by Colmar Grünhagen and Georg Hüffer . In the years 1890-1891 he studied at the seminary in Breslau and was ordained a priest in the Kreuzkirche in Breslau on June 23, 1891 - the solemn Primitz took place on July 2, 1891 in his home town of Groß Strehlitz.

After being ordained a priest, he was appointed a chaplain in Friedland and in 1894 was transferred to Sohrau as a religion teacher . On February 1, 1895, after passing an exam, he was granted permission to teach religion and the Hebrew language in the upper classes of middle school. In the years 1896–1918 he taught as a religion teacher at the municipal grammar school in Neustadt and wrote several articles for the local Neustädter newspaper .

In recognition of his services to the culture and history of this region, he was appointed honorary professor on December 20, 1909 , and on February 17, 1910 , he was promoted to a teaching position . On October 16, 1918, Alfons Nowack became archbishop archives director, museum director and administrator of the library of the Metropolitan Chapter ad Joannum in Breslau. In his publications , he mainly dealt with the history of his Upper Silesian homeland . On September 19, 1923 , he received his doctorate in philosophy with a dissertation on the history of the Catholic parish in Groß Strehlitz up to 1795.

Due to illness, he retired on January 1, 1940 and died on March 13, 1940 in the hospital of the Elisabeth Sisters in Wroclaw.
