action

Waldemar Wilhelm Wichteltod, a Santa Claus and ruler of the Christmas world, forbids the other Santa Clauses to fulfill children's wishes at Christmas and to turn them into gifts , as he is after the money of their parents who are supposed to pay for the gifts. Niklas Julebukk, however, opposes this and resists with six other Santa Clauses, although their boots have already been removed, which means that within 24 seconds they solidify into clear ice, which is called "Christmas field ice" in the Christmas world. Niklas Julebukk, the last “real” Santa Claus, is also said to experience this fate; however, he manages to escape. All reindeer , with the exception of Julebukk's shooting star , have now been made into salami and the goblins chased away. Only two of the goblins, namely Flybeard and Kleckerbeard , were able to flee with Julebukk.

The action begins on December 12 of the following year in the Christmas world. Julebukk tries to escape with the goblins from approaching nutcrackers, slow robot-like creatures, which leads to a chase between him and the gray men, supporters of Wichteltod. Julebukk manages to escape from Wichteltod's followers on snowmobiles in his Christmas wagon pulled by a shooting star, and the angels Emanuel and Matilda also join him. The chase ends at the border of the Christmas world, where shooting star can fly invisibly in the Christmas car over the earth, but the gray men have to stay behind.

In a thunderstorm conjured up by the death of an elf, Julebukk's car is separated from the shooting star and Santa Claus falls from heaven to earth. Near the crash site, Ben lives with his parents in his grandfather's house. The family had to move away from Munich due to financial difficulties . Ben's mother has opened a pastry shop in the new residential area . Before starting school at the new school, Ben sees Santa Claus crash. The next morning, instead of going to school, he goes to the crash site and is provoked by the children Chris, Mike and Jonas who join him to knock on Santa's car. At the same moment the children run away, only Ben remains behind.

At school, Ben is mocked by his classmate Mike, but he also gets to know Charlotte, who lives in the house next door. Her father left his family for Christmas the year before and has not been heard from since then. After class at school, Ben goes back to the Christmas car disguised as a construction trailer and makes the acquaintance of Julebukk and his helpers. Julebukk explains to him what happened and how it ended up on earth and Ben believes him. Ben also learns that the Christmas world is behind the white door of the construction trailer.

When Ben comes home that evening, he is confronted with the fact that his father has won a trip to Mallorca that is supposed to start on Christmas Eve of all times . Ben doesn't like this plan at all because he has a different idea of what Christmas should be like.

The next day Charlotte is out with her dog Wutz and passes Julebukk's camouflaged construction trailer, into which the dog runs, whereupon Charlotte follows him. Santa Claus tells her his story too, but she doesn't believe him and walks away when Ben appears. Santa Claus orders the boy to track down his invisible reindeer and bring it back to him. In order to be able to pick up the track, Ben must persuade Charlotte to go on a search with her dog Wutz, who can smell falling stars. The kids and pig track down the reindeer in the mall, fly away with it and bring it to Julebukk. Immediately after Julebukk has thanked the children and Wutz, he notices the gray men who are out and about in silver limousines looking for him. He just manages to escape into the forest with his trailer. For Ben and Charlotte, however, he leaves a trace that leads to him, and he quickly decorated everything in the pastry shop of Ben's mother for Christmas.

At school, Ben makes a bet with Mike that Santa Claus really exists. As proof, it should snow the next day. For this reason, Ben and Charlotte go to Julebukk, whom they find again in the forest according to the trail that has been laid. Since Julebukk wants people not to lose faith in him, he lets the children through the white door despite protests from the angels. From there, Ben and Charlotte can use a hose to suck up snow that will snow down to earth. However, they are discovered by nutcrackers who want to capture Ben and Charlotte. However, with the help of Julebukk, they can flee back to his trailer and have collected enough snow that it can snow on earth the next day.

Since Mike has given his word that proof will make him believe in Santa Claus, he now stands by it. Niklas Julebukk further enchanted Ben's mother's pastry shop during the night and also made sure that a tree in front of the building bears apples. The inhabitants of the small town are enthusiastic about the Christmassy charisma of the bad business in the past. Among the guests there is also Wichteltod, who pretends to be a “real” Santa Claus to Ben and Charlotte and asks them many questions about Julebukk. To warn him, Charlotte and Ben run to him and tell him that Wichtelod is near and ask about him. However, unnoticed by the children, the gray men followed them, so that Wichteltod is standing in front of the construction trailer shortly afterwards. He wants to take off Julebukk's boots in the forest so that he turns to ice. However, Ben and Charlotte intervene and, after a shooting star has pushed him, they can take off their boots. He demands his boots back and wants to forcibly enforce the return with the help of the gray men, but it fails. When the death of the gray men demands that they sacrifice their lives for his own, they flee. The approaching nutcrackers can be brought down by snowballs. After Wichtelod is without his boots for 24 seconds, he turns to ice and is finally defeated. So Christmas is saved. And all the more so when Ben learns that the family's planned trip to Mallorca will not take place because Ben's father slipped on the stairs of the pastry shop and broke his leg.

On Christmas Eve, Charlotte and Ben's family spontaneously decide to celebrate Christmas together. Ben and Charlotte are expecting Julebukk to visit him, who now also reveals himself to the adults as the last “real” Santa Claus and gives everyone presents. For Charlotte, a heartfelt wish comes true, namely to be able to talk to her father. When Julebukk says goodbye, he promises the children to visit them again next Christmas.

In the final frame of the film, Julebukk flies his car over the city of Salzburg, which is illuminated at night .

The film was produced by Bavaria Filmverleih- und Produktions GmbH , Wega Film , Ackermann Filmproduktion , Kiddinx Filmproduction and ZDF .

Differences between film and book

In the book, Ben's family situation is slightly different, as is Charlotte's. The renegade Santa Clauses are transformed into chocolate Santa Clauses in the template by Cornelia Funke, in the film they freeze into ice figures. Producer Uschi Reich explained this change by saying that children might no longer have been able to bite carefree into a chocolate Santa Claus, and the transformation into ice cream figures is stronger.

Reviews

The jury of the German Film and Media Assessment FBW certified the film's fantasy, which the whole family gets their money's worth. It also said: “Adorable ideas, lovable characters and a lively novel by Cornelia Funke create a good atmosphere right on time for Advent. And Alexander Scheer as the somewhat different Santa Claus is fun for young and old. "The child actors were certified that they can" convince "in their roles. One of the “imaginative and stimulating strengths of the film is certainly the trick design, especially that of the angels and goblins, the construction trailer and the last reindeer”. In conclusion, it was concluded: “The viewer with a certain literary and film experience feels partially like 'Hansel and Gretel' or 'The Snow Queen', certainly a little reminiscent of MOMO. All of this makes the film an experience worth watching for younger school children. "

“Director Oliver Dieckmann knows how to skillfully implement the fantastic world of Cornelia Funke. The Christmas workshop that opens inside the construction trailer is particularly picturesque. Dieckmann also has a solid ensemble with actors like Fritz Karl and (an inevitably staid) Jessica Schwarz. Alone the dandy, brash leading actor Alexander Scheer [...] takes a bit of getting used to. "

- Heidi Reutter, teleschau - the media service

“Fortunately, the filmmakers didn't cover Cornelia Funke's book with icing. While the invisible reindeer shooting star, the Christmas angels and goblins spread a lot of fairy tale magic, social reality shines through in the family scenes [...] again and again. Conclusion: Successful mixture of Christmas fairy tales, fantasy and family drama "

“[Uschi Reich] turns the imaginative template by bestselling author Cornelia Funke into a spectacular Christmas wonderland. […] Alexander Scheer's anarchic-casual and ultra-cool personified Anti-Nikolaus with a North German dialect, shaggy hair and little beard gives this story wit, speed and originality. However, in order not to drift off completely into a mix of a children's crime fiction […] and a nice old-fashioned fantasy adventure […], scenes from a family divorce social drama are counteracted. [...] Even if you could have done without one or two supporting characters in a film that is almost overflowing with ideas, nothing stands in the way of entertainment for the whole family. "
