Antonio van Diemen
Antonio van Diemen (also Anton , Anthonie , Anthony , Antonius ; * 1593 in Culemborg , † April 19, 1645 in Batavia (now Jakarta)) was Governor General of the Dutch East Indies .
Act
Van Diemen went to India and quickly rose to the dignity of an ordinary council. On January 1, 1636 he was appointed governor general. As such, he concluded an advantageous treaty with the King of Ternate , waged a successful war against the ruler of Amboina , seized the Portuguese settlements in Ceylon and Malacca , forced the Viceroy of Goa and the King of Fars to make peace and was the founder of the Dutch trade in Tongking . He initiated the discovery of the island of Tasmania, which was also named after him Vandiemensland . He paid no less attention to internal administration.
Designations
The Van Diemen Golf bears his name. In addition, Cape Maria van Diemen is named after his wife.
