Life
Prince Franz Joseph Arnulf Adalbert Maria was the youngest son of Prince Regent Luitpold and his wife Auguste Ferdinande of Austria- Tuscany. The officer Heinrich von Vallade (1830-1870) acted as his tutor and tutor.
Arnulf attended a humanistic grammar school and then the university. In 1868 he became a lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" of the Bavarian Army . In 1870/71 he took part in the fighting at Wörth , Beaumont , Sedan and Orléans as well as the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War . From 1873 to 1876 Arnulf graduated from the Bavarian War Academy , which awarded him the qualification for the general staff. As a captain , he took over a company in the infantry body regiment in 1876 , became a major in 1877 and as such was assigned to the general staff. Arnulf then took part in the Russo-Ottoman War until 1878 and rose to the rank of battalion commander on his return. As a colonel , he was initially commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" and from July 7, 1881 to March 19, 1884, commander of the Infantry Body Regiment. Arnulf was then promoted to major general commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade . In March 1887 he gave up command, became lieutenant general and, as such, commander of the 1st division . In 1890 he was promoted to General of the Infantry and two years later he was appointed Commanding General of the 1st Army Corps . In this position, Arnulf was appointed Colonel General with the rank of General Field Marshal in 1903, before he was removed from his position as Commanding General in the same year.
In 1907 he died in Venice at the age of 55, on the way home from a seven-month hunting expedition through the Caucasus and Central Asia. He is buried in the Theatine Church in Munich.
The new Leiber barracks was officially called "Prince Arnulf Barracks", but was popularly known as the Turk barracks because it was on Türkenstrasse. He is the namesake of Arnulfstraße in Munich (which was called Salzstraße until 1890, after the salt trade that Munich owes its foundation to). The chief musician of the infantry body regiment Max Högg dedicated a march to him, the Prince Arnulf March, which is still played today by the Bundeswehr music corps.
