The chairmen are Johannes Bohnen and Jan Kallmorgen. The other founding members were Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (Member of the Bundestag, FDP), Björn Sackniess, Christoph Schwegmann (BMVg), Andrea Stürmer ( Zurich Financial Services ), Rüdiger C. Sura ( Deutsche Bank ), Jan Techau (Carnegie Europe), Philipp-Christian Wachs ( Haus Rissen ), Magnus Prinz zu Wied (Huntsman Materials & Effects), Tobias Wolny (BP) and Lars Zimmermann ( Foundation New Responsibility ). In addition, the Atlantic Initiative is supported by a 32-member advisory board from business, politics and science. In the past, the association financed its work with funds from its own members, public grants and commissioned work for third parties.

Online Think Tank Atlantic Community

Atlantic Community is a Web 2.0 project of the Atlantic Initiative that started in 2007. The community should not only be a discussion platform, but also give its users the opportunity to formulate political concepts that should also influence practical politics. According to its own statement, the Atlantic Community had more than 6000 members in November 2011 and more than 7000 members in August 2012. Articles can be submitted by anyone to atlantic-community.org. The Atlantic Initiative regularly uses the articles to create so-called Atlantic Memos with proposals for politics and sends them to decision-makers. The site also contains the latest press releases and recommendations on think tank publications.

The Atlantic Initiative regularly organizes so-called policy workshops on this page , in which the best contributions are awarded, memos are created and the recommendations are also presented at events. The theme of the last workshop in 2012 was “Your Ideas, Your NATO” at the NATO summit in Chicago. Because of this profile, Atlantic-Community.org is now a “Facebook for foreign policy”.

Global Must Reads

Since August 2005, the association has published the monthly Global Must Reads ; these are a summary of important articles from specialist journals , press and science. According to a statement by the Atlantic Initiative, the Global Must Reads are “the most far-reaching foreign policy publication in German” with a readership of more than 22,000 people. Despite the association's name, the Atlantic Initiative is not limited to selecting topics for the Must Reads to German-American relations, but also addresses topics such as digital security and women in management positions.

Germany's agenda

In November 2011 the association initiated the Germany Agenda blog . With the self-chosen claim " Foreign policy for everyone ", the association offers a forum for discussion on German foreign policy. This project was funded by the Federal Press Office and the Haniel Foundation until the end of April 2012 . The Federal Foreign Office , BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt , German Federal Armed Forces Association , BP and the Allianz Kulturstiftung have been supporting this project since May 2012 .

On February 8, the blog was officially presented and published an article by Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and, in May 2012, another article by Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière . “Germany's Agenda” regularly focuses on topics. While the topic of “ Afghanistan ” was debated until the end of January 2012, February began with the focus on “Germany in the EU ”. For 2012, the topics G8 & G20 , the BRIC countries , new global powers and the NATO summit were also planned. In order to set strong accents in terms of content, articles from experts, think tanks , bloggers, politicians and the editorial team are invited on each topic .

The aim of the blog is to formulate “memos” with recommendations for action for politicians from the debates there. A first memo on the Bundeswehr was published in March and a second memo on German foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific region in November 2012.
