Eichfeld is a district of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

geography

Eichfeld is located about five kilometers west of the city center of Rudolstadt in the valley of the Schaalabach, the valley of which is dug deep into the limestone formation of the Ilm-Saale-Platte . The place is about 280 meters above sea level. The Gehegeberg (410 meters) rises to the northwest, the Schirmberg (395 meters) to the north and the Pörzberg (407 meters) to the northeast. The Kirschberg (461 meters) lies between the Lichstedter and the Keilhauer Tal west of Eichfeld, while the Steinberg (473 meters) with a nature reserve lies south of the Schaalabach. The mountains are forested, mainly pines were planted due to the dry and barren limestone soils, and the valleys are used for agriculture. Eichfeld itself is a clustered village with a relatively original structural structure. Its neighboring towns are Keilhau in the west, Lichstedt in the north and Schaala in the east. The Schwarzenshof is located southeast of Eichfeld .

history

Eichfeld was first mentioned in a document in 1074, which makes it one of the older villages in the area between Ilm and Saale . Like the surrounding area, Eichfeld also belonged to the Grafschaft Schwarzburg , from which the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt later emerged. Until 1918 the place belonged to the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt suzerainty .

On July 1, 1950, Eichfeld was incorporated into Keilhau , which was incorporated into Rudolstadt in 1993 .

Culture and sights

The most important architectural monument in the village is the Protestant parish church, which was built in 1751 with the inclusion of a previous building. The church is equipped with a sacrament shrine from around 1500. The original Eichfeld altar is now in the State Museum on the Heidecksburg . Next to the church is the bell house from 1644, in which there are two very old church tower bells. One comes from the workshop of Melchior Moeringk from Erfurt (cast 1636) and one dates from the 14th century.

Some buildings in the village are under monument protection, see: List of cultural monuments in Rudolstadt # Eichfeld .

Economy and Transport

Eichfeld is an agricultural place. Today most of the residents work in nearby Rudolstadt .

An old trade route runs through Eichfeld from Arnstadt / Erfurt via Stadtilm to Rudolstadt and Saalfeld . Nowadays it is a busy state road that connects the Saalfeld / Rudolstadt area to the federal motorway 71 near Arnstadt and to the state capital Erfurt. Therefore, after the opening of the A 71, the road was expanded and led around the town. Other roads lead to Keilhau and Schwarzenshof.
