August Johann Karl von Borries (born November 15, 1816 in Eisleben , † September 7, 1899 in Homburg in front of the height ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

August was a son of Government Secretary Ludwig von Borries (1774-1837) and his wife Auguste, née Fenkner (1785-1838). The politician Eduard von Borries (1807–1872) was his oldest brother.

Military career

Borries attended the cathedral high school in Magdeburg and then joined the 26th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer on June 26, 1833 . By the end of September 1835 he was promoted to secondary lieutenant and from October 1838 to September 1841 he completed the general war school for further training . During this time he was posted to the fortress reserve artillery company in Mainz from July to September 1840 . After his return to the regiment he was assigned to the 7th Artillery Brigade for one year in 1842 and to the 10th Hussar Regiment in 1844 . This was followed in 1846 as a teacher at the division school of the 7th Division and from June 1, 1847 to the topographical department of the Great General Staff . From February 8 to June 13, 1848 Borries was in the Guard Rifle Battalion and took part in the battles near Schleswig and Fredericia during the campaign against Denmark . He was then transferred to the 1st Battalion in the 26th Landwehr Regiment in Stendal and used in the battles near Ubstadt , Durlach and Michelbach in 1849 when the Baden Revolution was suppressed .

From November 26, 1850 to February 1, 1851 Borries was commanded as a general staff officer to the Prince of Prussia. By early February 1853 he was promoted to captain and from late March 1854 to mid-January 1856 he was a company commander in the 4th combined reserve battalion. On March 16, 1858, with a patent from January 24, 1851, he was appointed company commander in the 25th Infantry Regiment . With promotion to major , he was transferred to the General Staff of the 15th Division on November 2, 1858 . After being promoted to lieutenant colonel , he was transferred to Mainz on April 7, 1863 as commander of the 1st battalion in the Westphalian Fusilier Regiment No. 37 . On January 21, 1864, Borries was initially charged with running the business as a department head in the General Staff. In this capacity he received the Order of St. Stanislaus II. Class with a crown and was appointed head of department in mid-April. On January 4, 1866, he was appointed chief of the General Staff of the 1st Army Corps , where he was promoted to colonel on June 8, 1866 .

During the war against Austria in 1866 Borries took part in the battles near Trautenau , Tobitschau and Königgrätz and received the Crown Order II. Class with Swords for his work . After the peace treaty he resigned in the troop service and was appointed commander of the 3rd Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 14 in Stettin on July 20, 1867 . In position à la suite of the regiment, he was appointed commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade on July 14, 1870 during mobilization on the occasion of the war against France and in mid-September 1870 he was promoted to major general . After Borries was badly wounded in the Battle of Beaumont , the war was over for him. On February 10, 1874 he was transferred to the army officers and commanded to represent the commander of the 4th Division . On April 4, 1874, Borries was commissioned to lead this division and on September 15, 1874, he was appointed commander. In this position, he was promoted to lieutenant general four days later . After his farewell , Kaiser Wilhelm II paid tribute to him on March 22, 1897 by awarding him the crown to the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class with oak leaves. He died on September 7, 1899 in Homburg vor der Höhe.

General Hann von Weyhern wrote about him in his assessment in 1879: “The good condition in which I was again in the 4th Division with regard to its training this year, testifies to the favorable influence on the part of the division commander and is very visible. I could only agree to the creation of the larger exercises and their management. "

Borries married Mathilde Bertog (1827-1880) on November 14, 1847 in Magdeburg . The couple had several children:
