St. Peter's Basilica (Dillingen)
The St. Peter Basilica is a Catholic parish church in the center of Dillingen an der Donau . In addition to the Augsburg Cathedral , St. Peter is the co- cathedral of the Augsburg diocese and thus also the consecration and grave church for the Augsburg bishops .
history
In 1498, Friedrich II. Von Zollern , Bishop of Augsburg , had a collegiate monastery built on the previous building of today's parish church ; it was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . The collegiate church became a parish church again.
Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1979 .
Church building
The three-aisled hall church was built from 1619 to 1628 by the court architect Hans Alberthal on the foundations of previous churches from the 13th and 15th centuries. The church has cathedral-like dimensions; it is 54.8 meters long, 22.3 meters high and 22 meters wide. The church was renovated in 1643 after damage in the Thirty Years' War during the occupation of Dillingen by the Swedes. In 1669, the Gothic tower from the previous church was raised to 49 meters by David Motzardt , great-great-grandfather of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . In 1733 the Erasmus Chapel was built on the north side, in 1733 and 1734 the stucco and painting was carried out in its current form. From August 2015 to April 2019 the static repairs with exterior and interior restoration took place.
The monastery church of the Franciscan Sisters adjoins the south-east corner of the basilica, and a Lourdes grotto is located on the south-west corner .
organ
In 1978 the organ building company Hubert Sandtner (Dillingen) built the organ of the basilica with 47 registers , whereby some registers of the predecessor organ by GF Steinmeyer (Oettingen) from 1889 were reused. In 2006 the disposition was changed and expanded to 53 registers.
