history

Heinrich Frölich founded a publishing bookstore in Berlin in 1798 after having acquired the Berlin privilege from the bookseller Friedrich Vieweg . Frölich began his publishing activities with the magazine Athenaeum , which was edited by the brothers August Wilhelm Schlegel and Friedrich Schlegel with the collaboration of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Novalis .

Carl Duncker and Peter Humblot took over the business in 1809 - after Frölich's death - and continued it under the name Duncker & Humblot. Their successors, Carl Geibel and Son , moved the publishing house to Leipzig in 1866 . In the signet that the publisher has had since 1867, a wing-swinging eagle holds a sheet of paper with the Latin motto Vincit Veritas (Truth wins) in its claws .

Leading authors and philosophers of the late Goethe period were part of the Duncker & Humblot publishing program at the beginning of the 19th century, such as Heinrich Beitzke , Wilhelm Wachsmuth and Karl Friedrich Becker . After the takeover by Geibel, Duncker & Humblot was considered the most important German publisher for historical literature. Multi-volume compilations became increasingly characteristic. Leopold von Ranke was the most important author of the publishing house, who published exclusively there from 1827, a Ranke complete edition in 54 volumes appeared from 1857 to 1890. Other important authors of this phase were Ernst Bernheim , Karl Wilhelm Nitzsch and Wilhelm von Giesebrecht .

From 1915 to 1933 the lawyer Ludwig Feuchtwanger - brother of the writer Lion Feuchtwanger  - was the scientific director of the publishing house. The contacts to Carl Schmitt date from this time . In 1922, Munich became the headquarters of the publishing house, whose owners changed in 1938: The new owner, Johannes Broermann , moved the headquarters back to Berlin, where they moved into a listed building on the Fichtenberg from 1878, designed by Georg Toebelmann .

The Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB) has been published by Duncker & Humblot since 1953 . After Johannes Broermann's death (1984), Norbert Simon became the sole managing partner. In 2002 Florian Simon joined the management. From 2002 Norbert Simon held 51% and Florian Simon 49% of the shares in the GmbH . Norbert Simon died on May 30, 2013.

The publisher came under fire in 2013 for having published an Oswald Spengler biography by Sebastian Maaß . Maaß was accused of a lack of scientific and political neutrality. The publisher then took the book out of the offer. Lothar Kettenacker also criticized the publication of the Ribbentrop biography by the historical revisionist author Stefan Scheil . The fact that one embarks on such a “work” is “both remarkable and extremely dubious. It suggests that even in the educated middle class there are still many yesterday who come into question as readers and make such a project appear commercially interesting. "

Among the first authors of the publishing house were u. a. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , ETA Hoffmann and Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué . Well-known scientists published by Duncker & Humblot include:
