Benjamin Ashenafi "Ben" Gordon (born April 4, 1983 in London ) is a former British - American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2004 to 2015 . Gordon was voted “ NBA Sixth Man of the Year ” in the 2004/05 season as the first rookie ever . He was characterized above all by his strong distance throw.

career

High school and college career

Ben Gordon was born to Jamaican parents in London, but moved with them shortly after his birth to Mount Vernon , New York , where he grew up.

During his high school years, Gordon played for the Mount Vernon Knights , with whom he reached the New York State Public and Federation Championships in 2000 . He was an all-state player at Mount Vernon and was among the top 40 newcomers.

After his time in high school, Gordon moved to the University of Connecticut . Gordon played with Emeka Okafor at UCONN and won the 2004 NCAA Championships.

After his junior year at college, Gordon was put up for the 2004 NBA Draft , where he was selected third by the Chicago Bulls . In contrast to his time in college, Gordon wore the number 7 in the Bulls jersey, as the number 4 is no longer awarded in honor of Jerry Sloan .

In his first NBA season, Gordon averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists, helping to lead the Bulls into the playoffs for the first time since Michael Jordan retired . As the first NBA rookie, Gordon was awarded the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award after the 2004/2005 NBA season . Gordon was also voted Rookie of the Month three times in the Eastern Conference and in the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

On April 14, 2006, Gordon set a record for the most consecutive three-point throws in a game against the Washington Wizards , nine in number. In the game against the Milwaukee Bucks he succeeded on March 4, 2007 with 48 points scored his previous career best. On December 27, 2008, Gordon passed Scottie Pippen as the Chicago Bulls' best three-point shooter of all time. The 2006-07 season he closed 21.4 points per game as the Bulls' best scorer.

On April 20, 2009, exactly 23 years after Michael Jordan delivered one of his best play-off games against the Boston Celtics , Gordon set a personal play-off record against the same opponent with 42 points.

Prior to the start of the 2009-10 season, Ben Gordon signed a 5-year, $ 55 million contract with the Detroit Pistons . On January 9, 2010, he scored the 10,000,000 point in NBA history in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers .

For the 2012/2013 season, Gordon was transferred from the Pistons to the Charlotte Bobcats . In return, Corey Maggette moved to Detroit. At the Bobcats, he could not meet the expectations placed in him and was fired by the Cats in his sophomore year .

In the summer of 2014, Gordon signed with the Orlando Magic . However, his contract was terminated after one season. He got an average of 6.2 points in 56 missions at Magic.

During the off-season 2015, he signed a trial contract with the Golden State Warriors , where he was used in two preparation games. However, he was not included in the final squad.

On January 24, 2017, Gordon was signed by the NBA G-League team Texas Legends , his final post as a basketball player.

National team

Gordon played for the US selection at the Pan American Games in 2003 . On April 1, 2008, he was shortlisted for the British national basketball team. He wanted to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in his own country, but was not nominated for the final squad and later showed no interest in playing for the British selection. In preparation for qualifying for the 2017 European Championship , he was used for the first time for Great Britain.
