Berestechko

Berestetschko (Ukrainian and Russian Берестечко ; Polish Beresteczko ) is a small town in Volyn Oblast in Ukraine . It is located on the Styr River and has 1904 inhabitants (as of 2001).

history

The place received the Magdeburg Law in 1547 . In June 1651, at the time of the Khmelnytskyi uprising , near the Battle of Berestechko , the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania fought with the Zaporozhian Cossacks and Tatars . After the third division of Poland , the region came under the Russian Empire in 1795. After the October Revolution of 1917 there were armed conflicts between Poland and Russia over the border areas until a peace treaty resulted in an agreement. From 1921 to 1939 the city was part of Poland.

With the Soviet occupation of Eastern Poland as a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , the state's membership of the Ukrainian SSR changed . During the Second World War , the city was temporarily part of the German " Reichskommissariat Ukraine ". The National Socialists established a ghetto for the Jewish population and murdered all Jewish residents in September 1942. Of the six synagogues in the village, only the Great Synagogue building remained.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the place is now part of the independent Ukraine.
