Biferno (wine)
Biferno DOC are dry red , rosé and white wines from the Italian province of Campobasso ( Molise region ). The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1983 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.
Cultivation
The cultivation and vinification of the wines is permitted in the following municipalities:
Acquaviva Collecroce , Campobasso , Campodipietra , Campomarino , Castelbottaccio , Castellino del Biferno , Colletorto , Ferrazzano , Gambatesa , Guardialfiera , Guglionesi , Larino , Limosano , Lucito , Lupara , Macchia nano , Valfortore , Mirabello Montecannio , Montag , Montaldannitico , Montaldannitico , Montano nano , Montano , Montecannio , Montemitro , Montenero di Bisaccia , Montorio nei Frentani , Palata , Petacciato , Petrella Tifernina , Pietracatella , Portocannone , Rotello , Santa Croce di Magliano , San Felice del Molise , San Giacomo degli Schiavoni , San Giovanni in Galdo , San Giuliano di Puglia , San Martino in Pensilis , Tavenna , Termoli , Toro , Tufara and Ururi - all in the province of Campobasso . The vineyards are located in the hills at a height of a maximum of 500 to 600 m above sea level. NN .

According to the denomination, the following types of wine (with a prescribed composition of grape varieties ) are possible:
- Biferno rosso (also called “Riserva” and “Superiore”) and Biferno rosato : Both types of wine must contain at least 70% and at most 80% Montepulciano . Furthermore, 10-20% Aglianico must be used. A maximum of 20% other red grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Molise region may be added.
- Biferno bianco : Must consist of a minimum of 70% and a maximum of 80% Trebbiano Toscano . A maximum of 20-30% of other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Molise region may be added.
