Birgit Weyhe

Birgit Weyhe (* 1969 in Munich ) is a German comic artist , illustrator and author of graphic novels .

Life

Birgit Weyhe was born in Munich and spent her childhood and youth in the East African countries Uganda and Kenya . After graduating from high school , she returned to Germany at the age of 19 and completed a master's degree in German literature and history in Konstanz and Hamburg . In the years 2002 to 2008 an additional study of illustration with Anke Feuchtenberger at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (HAW) followed, which she completed with a diploma.

Birgit Weyhe has lived and worked in her adopted home Hamburg- Altona for many years . In Hamburg she also works as a lecturer in the design department at the University of Applied Sciences.

In her partly autobiographical work Birgit Weyhe combines the style of European comic - vanguard of African design. Her works have been shown in exhibitions not only in Germany, but also in Portugal , France , Italy , Belgium , Austria and Switzerland and have been published in various countries in magazines and anthologies .

In 2007 Birgit Weyhe took 2nd place at the Fumetto Festival in Lucerne with the competition theme Future and in 2009 in Linz at the Nextcomic Festival 1st place.

On behalf of the Goethe-Institut Birgit Weyhe organized workshops about her work in Montréal ( Canada ), Montevideo ( Uruguay ) and Córdoba ( Argentina ). In 2012 she took part in a several-week exchange program run by the Goethe Institute for comic artists in São Paulo ( Brazil ). The Goethe-Institut Poland recommends Birgit Weyhe's graphic novel Im Himmel ist Jahrmarkt as teaching material to support learning the German language and makes it available for download in a didactically prepared form on its homepage.

For her fourth comic book entitled Madgermanes , which deals with the life of the former GDR contract workers from Mozambique , the so-called Madgermanes , Birgit Weyhe was awarded the comic book prize of the Berthold Leibinger Foundation on May 4, 2015 in the Literaturhaus Stuttgart . This prize was awarded for the first time in 2015 and, at 15,000 euros, is the highest endowed German prize for comics and graphic novels. The prize is expressly designed as a sponsorship prize , which should support the author in completing the approximately 250-page book. The volume was published in 2016 by Avant-Verlag and received the award for the best German-language comic at the Max and Moritz Prize at the 17th Erlangen Comic Salon .
