Bloodshot is an American science fiction - action film by director Dave Wilson from the year 2020. The film is based on the eponymous comic book character of Valiant Comics , which by Vin Diesel is embodied. The film was released in German cinemas on March 5, 2020.

action

US soldier Ray Garrison is supported by Dr. Emil Harting, head of the RST company, says that after his death he was brought back to life and injected with a substance that gave him extraordinary abilities, including tremendous speed and strength, as well as self-healing powers. With a memory of the murder of his wife, Garrison decides to track down the culprit and kill him. In truth, however, Garrison is under the control of RST, who control his memory and can set him on goals of their choosing. Over time, Garrison discovers this secret and turns against the company.

production

In March 2012, Columbia Pictures secured the rights to a film adaptation of the Bloodshot comic series by Valiant Comics . Jeff Wadlow was hired as screenwriter , while Neal H. Moritz , Jason Kotharo and Dinesh Shamdasani were supposed to act as producers for the production company Original Film . In April 2015 it was announced that David Leitch and Chad Stahelski would film the script written by Wadlow and Oscar-nominated Eric Heisserer so that Bloodshot could be released in theaters in 2017. After they both left the project, Dave Wilson was hired in March 2017 for the post, who made his directorial debut with the film. According to his own statement, Wilson wanted to pursue a very "aggressive style of filmmaking" in Bloodshot , which for him has not yet been explored enough in comic book adaptations. Although Jared Leto was initially traded for the title role, Vin Diesel was finally hired as the protagonist in March 2018 . The reason for his participation was given by the interesting, complex and well-written script, which is anchored in reality and which deals with topics such as post-traumatic stress.

Eiza González , Sam Heughan , Michael Sheen , Talulah Riley , Alex Hernandez , Toby Kebbell and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson also joined the cast later . González said of her involvement that she was proud to be the first actress to play a Latin American superhero, even if her character was laid out more emotional than action-heavy. For them, however, the film is down-to-earth and a “modern modification of the superhero genre”. Shortly before the start of filming, the involvement of the actor Lamorne Morris became known, who should appear in two sequels if the film is successful. Sheen later had to leave the project for family and scheduling reasons and was replaced by Guy Pearce .

Filming began on August 6, 2018 at Cape Town Film Studios in Cape Town . Later recordings were made in Prague and Budapest . Jacques Jouffret acted as cameraman . Shooting was officially completed on October 26, 2018.

A first trailer was released on October 21, 2019, and a second trailer was released on January 14, 2020. The US launch date originally planned for February 20, 2020 was postponed to March 13, 2020 in December 2019. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on March 5, 2020. A publication in Austria should take place on March 19, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated worldwide cinema closings , Bloodshot was released digitally on March 24, 2020 in the United States and three days later in Germany. In the United States, the film was finally released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 5, 2020, and on June 4, 2020 in Germany.

reception

Age rating

In the United States, the film received a PG-13 approval from the MPA for "violent scenes of violence, suggestive material and language." In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for people aged 16 and over. The reasoning states that the film contains numerous fighting scenes in which violence is only played out and clearly shown in a few moments longer. Young people from the age of 16 would be able to place these scenes in the context of the exaggerated and unrealistic science fiction story, process them accordingly and maintain an emotional distance. Excessive demands can therefore be ruled out.

Reviews

Bloodshot was able to convince 30% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 44 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Owen Gleiberman from Variety describes the film as fun trash , which recycles many well-known elements and is very entertaining thanks to these references. Bloodshot is staged in such a way that the viewer can understand and experience the pleasant albeit disoriented feeling of the protagonist, which is what makes up a large part of the effectiveness of the film. It should also be positively emphasized that the film plays with the question of what reality is. Vin Diesel shows himself from his best side, delivers a wild and committed performance, gives the film an identity and has an “action charisma” at its peak. The special effects background from director Dave Wilson would make the action sequences even more realistic, violent and smooth. Gleiberman also praised Lamorne Morris , who stole the show in almost every scene.

Hollywood Reporter's Justin Lowe is more critical of the film. For him, Bloodshot tries to start his own superhero universe, but already the first film has difficulties providing enough material. The rather silent Diesel approached the unspectacular basic idea with a lot of enthusiasm, but his fame stood in the way of the international fame of the comic. This is partly due to the underdeveloped script, which has no sense of character development or background story. In conclusion, Lowe concludes that the film has enough explosions, shootings, and fighting to entertain a young male audience, but that it will not be well received outside of this predictable fan base.

Christopher Diekhaus from kino-zeit.de makes a similar assessment. You have seen all the plot elements before, Diesel does not provide any nuances of character and his rigid facial expressions do not create any real emotions. One of the big weaknesses is that the twist - already known to the comic readers - has already been shown in the trailer and the viewer no longer has any real desire to follow the plot after this. At this point, Bloodshot missed out on addressing the main character's inner crisis and instead served listless scenes. All secondary characters would appear flat and template-like, especially the figure embodied by Eiza González is only staged as a beautiful eye-catcher. The film tries to compensate for these deficits with its optics and action, but due to bad computer effects and an overly hectic editing, no groundbreaking images are created here either.

On the other hand, Jörg Gerle from Filmdienst argues that Bloodshot has quite considerable display values, for example a futuristic research station or gimmicks that are adventurous to use. The implementation is primarily useful, but has more potential. The twist in the middle of the plot would create a “ blade runner flair”, but the film scores primarily with the action and the usual cool sayings from Diesel. At times really interesting aspects would flash up, but these are not consistently pursued by the makers. Nevertheless, the action plot is enhanced by these aspects and questions like good and bad.

Gross profit

In Germany, the film had around 57,000 admissions on the first weekend, and a further 22,000 in the following week, before all cinemas across Germany were closed from March 12, 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . In the United States, Bloodshot entered the US theatrical chart in third place on the opening weekend, which was the slowest cinema weekend in North America in terms of sales for 22 years, with revenues of $ 9.3 million. The budget of 45 million US dollars is offset by worldwide box office earnings of 29.31 million US dollars, of which the film alone grossed 10.02 million in North America. The film recorded a total of 110,478 admissions in Germany.
