Breitenberg is a place in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony and is located on the district road 111 between Duderstadt and Hilkerode , four kilometers northeast of Duderstadt. The village, which belongs to the Untereichsfeld , has been part of the city of Duderstadt since January 1, 1973 and has a population of around 900.

history

The origin of the place probably goes back to the 9th century. The first, as yet unsecured, documentary mentioning of Breitenberg took place in 1287 in the document book of the city of Braunschweig. An indirect, but secure, mention was made on May 8, 1314 in a document from the Teistungenburg monastery . In the list of witnesses in this document, in addition to two other clerics , Johannes de Bredenberg zu Berlingerode is listed as a witness to a legal transaction that affects the mills in Nesselröden . On April 25, 1368, Elisabeth, the wife of Hans von Minnigerode , renounced her personal property and the tithe in Breitenberg in favor of the Quedlinburg Abbey . With this handover, enfeoffed on 28/29. May 1368 the abbess Elisabeth von Quedlinburg the city of Duderstadt, against payment of a Duderstädter mark. The fief of Breitenberg to the city of Duderstadt, which was repeatedly confirmed by the abbess until the Reformation, suggests the early development of the village. The Quedlinburg Women's Foundation saw itself as the owner of the village for a long time. Regardless of this, Duderstadt treated it not only as a fief, but as property and ran it as one of eleven council villages that were obliged to pay taxes and services to the city. Due to the fact of the enfeoff , Breitenberg also fell under the complete economic dependence of the Duderstädter council. Other Ratsdörfer Duderstadts, such as Mingerode , Hilkerode and Tiftlingerode , were not subject to this dependent relationship.

From the Middle Ages until 2014, Breitenberg was a consistently independent parish , despite some interruptions in the occupation of the pastoral position; first pastor mentioned is Bertold around 1350. The first entry in the church register was made on February 27, 1720. At the end of the 18th century, the parish lacked the means to build a new rectory, which has since become uninhabitable. The last pastor living in the village for the time being is Lorenz Germershausen (1782-1791). Between 1791 and 1905 chaplains from Duderstadt administered the parish as vicars, but the parish remained independent. Breitenberg received its own pastoral care provider again at the beginning of the 20th century, after a new rectory had been built. On September 27, 1905, the bishop reorganized the parish.

With the Hanoverian Redemption Act of 1831, the replacement of peasant duties began, which continued into the 20th century. The Hübental forest was owned by the city of Duderstadt from 1371 to 1985. A forester's house, which later became a restaurant, has been attested since 1711. As in the other council villages of Duderstadt, Breitenberg also suffered in the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. The place was stopped for contribution payments and billeting purposes. In addition, the small town was plundered.

Economically, the place is characterized by construction and related trades, as well as agriculture . However, there was also a plush and toy factory on site.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on December 9, 1950.

Blazon : "In gold on a green hill, a red windmill."

For generations, a post windmill has adorned the "Windmühlenplatz". In 1891, however, a hurricane brought the decrepit building to collapse. In 1979 a replica of the former mill was built approx. 50 m from the original location on the site of the old cemetery, which is now used as a "fairground" for the community. No matter which direction you were driving into the village, you could always see the wings of the towering windmill immediately. Because of the altitude and because there was no stream flowing through the village, it was not possible to operate a water mill.

Church of the Annunciation

Church of the Annunciation

The Catholic Church "Annunciation" was built between 1896 and 1897 according to plans by the Franciscan Paschalis Gratze ( Hülfensberg ). Gratze was also responsible for other churches in the region and only a few years earlier built, among others, those in Effelder and Gerblingerode and expanded the pilgrimage church on the Hülfensberg. The new building in Breitenberg was necessary due to the dilapidation of the previous baroque church , which was built in 1709 and expanded in 1780. Little is known about this previous church, but some details can be reconstructed. It was a single-nave building with a three-sided apse without a transept, which was expanded in the years 1788 and 1851 in a western and eastern direction. It had an altar from Jützenbach, which was decorated by Christoph Sander from Dingelstadt in 1813 and thus acquired a baroque white and gold color. Other items of equipment were the pulpit, confessional, organ, baptismal font and stalls . The sandstone church had a ridge turret on the tiled roof for the two bells that were cast in 1484 and 1751. The stones necessary for the construction of the church were taken from the nearby Brehme quarry . In the church inventory of 1864, the dimensions of the church are found to be 75 feet long , 31 feet deep, and 18 feet high.

The new church forms a high, but not very projecting complex with a single nave , a three-aisled transept , which only extends around a yoke , and a choir that is closed on five sides. There are also buttresses on the outside and a tower that was placed on top of the church like a roof turret. Inside there are ribbed vaults , leaf consoles , round columns with vine capitals, wall pillars on the walls of the transept and tracery windows . The interior is largely in the neo-Gothic style. The crucifixion group is held in a white and golden shade, while the assistant figures present themselves in a rococo style . A baroque wooden crucifix is located on the first transept yoke on the southern outer wall in a niche below the window. In 1911 the church was painted in the appropriate style.

Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Cyriakus , based in Duderstadt.

organ

The organ was built in 1877 by master organ builder Louis Krell from Duderstadt with eleven registers and renovated in 1961 by the same workshop and expanded by four voices. In 1997 the organ building workshop Bosch from Niestetal carried out an extensive restoration of the still original wind chests (main mechanism and pedal) and register parts as well as a new construction of the case, the action and the console. This work was largely based on other historical Krell instruments.
