Bruno Friedrich Alexander Count Neidhardt von Gneisenau (born May 3, 1811 in Kauffung , † November 2, 1889 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the Prussian reformer and later General Field Marshal August Neidhardt von Gneisenau and his wife Juliane Karoline Friederike, née Freiin von Kottwitz (1772-1832).

Military career

Gneisenau attended education in Bunzlau and later the Liegnitz Knight Academy . He joined the 1st Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army as a volunteer on June 1, 1830 . On January 21, 1832 he was transferred to the 2nd Jäger Department, where he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in March 1833 . As such, Gneisenau came to the 1st Jäger Department at the beginning of April 1838. In April 1846 he was appointed adjutant in the inspection of the hunters and riflemen and on February 4, 1847 under promotion to the prime lieutenant in the Guard Hunters Battalion in Potsdam . From November 21, 1848 to June 18, 1850, Gneisenau served as second adjutant in the inspection of the hunters and riflemen and was then taken over to the Guards Rifle Battalion while being promoted to captain . After further assignments in various Jäger battalions, Gneisenau took his leave on April 13, 1861 as Lieutenant Colonel, transferred to Nassau services and became the commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment . In this position promoted to colonel on June 25, 1864 , he resigned in Prussian service at the end of the year. He was given command of 4th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 72 in Torgau .

In 1866 Gneisenau took part in the battles near Liebenau, Münchengrätz and Blumenau during the war against Austria . In the battle of Königgrätz he was slightly wounded by a shrapnel. In 1868 he was appointed major general. As such, he took part in the Franco-German War in 1870/71 as commander of the 31st Infantry Brigade of the 16th Division and was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross .

On February 18, 1873 Gneisenau was promoted to commandant of Magdeburg and a month later to lieutenant general. On May 18, 1876, he was transferred to the army officers and became governor of Ulm Fortress . With the approval of his resignation, Gneisenau was placed on April 4, 1882 with the character of General of the Infantry and at the same time à la suite of Colberg Grenadier Regiment (2nd Pomeranian) No. 9 .

He was Canon zu Naumburg since 1881 and a member of the Prussian mansion since 1885 .
