The Buol (Bul - Bulen) are a branched, originally Bohemian family that has appeared in Graubünden since 1340 and rose to become one of the most influential families there. Various branches of the family were ennobled.

Origins

The from Bohemia originating Captain Ulrich Buol, even Bulen or Bul called and 1340 in Davos documented as Ulrich von Bulen is in the genealogy as ancestor called the later noble families named "Buol". Ulrich Buol went to the field for King Albrecht von Habsburg in 1298 in the battle of Göllheim and his opponent Adolf von Nassau . His son Hanns Friedrich Buol, born around 1280 in Bohemia, who also served under Duke Albrecht, married Elisabeth von Engelsberg, born around 1285, in 1304 . He died in Davos in 1327.

The Buol were in the military, Landammann and Bundeslandamman in the three leagues and as imperial ambassadors in the empire. They fought not only for the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire , but also for other ruling houses.

Lieutenant Colonel Salomon von Buol (1549-1634) was King Henry IV. Of France ennobled .

Johann Anton Buol (1601–1662), who served as Landammann, Bundslandammann, captain in the French regiment, colonel in Spanish service, as Podestà and repeatedly as envoy , received from Emperor Ferdinand III in 1649 . the predicate "von Strassberg" . Paul von Buol-Strassberg (1634–1697), colonel in the Spanish army, envoy of the three leagues to the Spanish and Austrian courts, was raised in 1696 by Emperor Leopold I to baron of Rietberg and Strassberg . With the title Imperial Knight "von Buol-Berenberg ", Emperor Joseph I rewarded Hans Andreas Buol (1647–1768) in 1707 for his loyalty to the emperor and empire. The KK grenadier captain of the infantry Johann Ignaz von Buol-Berenberg received the Austrian baron diploma "von Berenberg und Mühlingen" from Emperor Franz II on May 29, 1795

The Imperial and Royal Councilor Johann Georg Buol (1656–1727) was honored in 1718 with the baron status diploma and the title “von Wischenau” .

The first coat of arms of the Buol family was likely to have shown a black three-mountain on a white / silver background and, growing out of it, also a black clover leaf with stem. In the register of arms of the city of Baden in the Swiss canton of Aargau , the coat of arms of the Buol family from Kaiserstuhl (Aargau) has been expanded: a green shamrock in red on a green Dreiberg, with two silver roses on top. The crest of a growing woman, a clover in each hand.

The (younger) family coat of arms shows in a shield split by blue and silver a maiden of mistaken color with a rose (originally a clover stem) in her hand. On the helmet with blue and silver covers a crowned blue lion, also growing and with a clover stem or spear (or scepter) in its paws.
