Carl Fink (painter)

Carl Fink (also: Karl WE or Carl WE Fink or Finck * September 22, 1814 in Kassel ; † January 17, 1890 ibid) was a German architecture , theater and decoration as well as animal and plant painter , draftsman and poet . He published poems , fables and several writings about the geometric construction and coloring of the flat ornament as well as about the life of our house cat . Because of his cat depictions, he was nicknamed "Katzenfinck" in old age .

life and work

Born at the beginning of the 19th century in Kassel as the son of a registrar , Carl Fink studied at the art academy there with Friedrich Wilhelm Müller and at the same time copied templates in the Kassel Old Masters Picture Gallery .

From 1835 Fink exhibited in Hanover for the first time . Through his acquaintance with Eduard Primavesi , Fink came to the theater painting, worked in 1836 in Hanau and Würzburg , in 1839 and 1840 in Berlin at the Königstädter Theater , from 1840 to 1842 also in Cologne . Fink stayed in Italy from 1842 to 1848 , including a total of around 5 years in Venice , where he especially created larger architectural pictures. From Rome he returned to Kassel in 1848, where he worked at Escheberg Castle .

From 1852 - the year of the opening of the new opera house planned by court architect Laves in Hanover - Carl Fink worked as a court theater and decoration painter and as a drawing teacher in the royal seat of the Kingdom of Hanover . From 1856 he delivered to King George V an " album consisting of 131 sheets of drawings of Central American plants ". The plant illustrations were later to be printed as lithographs and provided with descriptive explanations - today, however, are considered lost .

Around 1862 Fink made a painting with a "View of a winter garden with tropical plants, palm trees and exotic birds", which shows the interior of the palm house of the Herrenhausen mountain garden built by Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves . This oil painting was owned by the Guelphs until 2005 .

Also up to 1862 Carl Fink supplied the watercolors for the cover picture as well as 19 plates for the Ernst August album, which was reproduced by the Hof- Druckerei Klindworth on the occasion of the parade for the inauguration of the Ernst-August-Monument .

After the botanist Hermann Wendland returned to Hanover from his research and collecting trip through Costa Rica in 1858, Fink made an oil painting of the newly discovered South American plants that Wendland had brought with him .

Fink worked in Hanover until 1866, the year of the Battle of Langensalza and the annexation of Hanover by Prussia, which also took place in 1866 .

From 1869 Carl Fink taught as an employee in his hometown at the commercial drawing school in Kassel and at the local secondary school for girls .

Fink had two sons who worked as painters and sculptors .

Some of Carl Fink's works came into the possession of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library - Lower Saxony State Library with the Royal Garden Library Herrenhausen (KGBH) , others can be found in the Lower Saxony Main State Archives . In addition to oil paintings in the Hessen Kassel museum landscape , the following works are also known:
