Cartago is a commune ( municipality ) in the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia . It is located about 187 kilometers from the capital of the department, Cali .

Cartago is at an altitude of about 917 meters. Adjoin the northern city Pereira , in the West Ansermanuevo , south Toro and Obando and east Ulloa , Alcala and Quimbaya .

history
Cartago was founded in 1540 by Jorge Robledo on the Río Otún, where the city of Pereira is today. 150 years later, the city was relocated to a new location between the Cauca and La Vieja rivers , where it is still today.
