The district Chakwal is an administrative district in Pakistan in the province of Punjab . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Chakwal .

The district has an area of ​​6524 km² and according to the 2017 census 1,495,982 inhabitants. The population density is 229 inhabitants / km². The Punjabi language is spoken by the majority in the district .

The district is located in the north of the Punjab Province, which is in the west of Pakistan.

history

During the British rule, Chakwal was part of the Jhelam district . According to the 1891 census, the population was 164,912 and had decreased to 160,316 by 1901. When India was partitioned, the predominantly Muslim population supported the Muslim League and Pakistani independence . After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the Hindu and Sikhs immigrated to India, while Indian Muslim refugees settled in the Chakwal district.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew by 1.71% annually. About 19% of the population live in urban regions and about 81% in rural regions. 724,205 men, 771,744 women and 33 transgender people live in 266,109 households , resulting in a gender ratio of 93.8 men per 100 women and thus a rare surplus of women for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 74% (women: 66%, men: 84%) and is thus well above the Punjab province average of 63%.
