Main entrance to the university

The Chalmers University of Technology ( Swedish Chalmers tekniska högskola , English Chalmers University of Technology ) is a technical university in the Swedish city of Gothenburg .

The college was founded in 1829 from a foundation by William Chalmers , a director of the Swedish East India Company .

history

The origins of the college go back to a donation from William Chalmers for the foundation of a craft school for poor children.

Eighteen years after Chalmers' death, the first lessons took place in Gothenburg city center in 1829. The private school there grew steadily until the move to today's Johanneberg campus in 1926. After the Chalmers was appointed a university in 1937 and nationalized, it was again transferred to a private foundation in 1994. At the same time, work began on the new Lindholmen campus in 1994.

Faculties

There is also the Gothenburg Center for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (GoCAS), which, together with the Universities of Gothenburg , Oxford and other partners , initiates research on existential risks , food security and earth-like planets .

Spatial situation

Lindholmen campus

The university is spatially divided into two campuses :

The older and larger Johanneberg campus, located near the city center, forms the main part of the university. Most of the courses for architects and engineers take place there, as well as the house of the student union and a large part of the research.

The Lindholmen campus is located north of the Göta älv river and is home to the IT University and the Faculty of Shipping and Marine Technology.
