The series includes thirteen episodes. An additional episode was released as Original Video Animation (OVA) in March 2016 . In addition, two manga series were published in Dengeki G's Comics by ASCII Media Works .

The plot of the anime series takes place in an alternate reality in which a small number of children develop superhuman skills by the time they reach puberty . The story follows high school student Yū Otosaka, who develops the ability to control other people for a few seconds, which arouses the interest of Tomori Nao, the student council president of a school founded to provide safety to these exceptional students.

The story was conceived by Jun Maeda , who also wrote the script and composed all the music for the series. Na-Ga created the character designs. Both work for the game developer Key . Charlotte is the company's second anime series after Angel Beats! from 2010.

action

The story of Charlotte takes place in an alternate reality in which a comet approaches Earth every 75 years . While this is happening, tiny particles of the very same comet enter the Earth's atmosphere , causing a small number of children who inhale the dust to develop various superpowers during their puberty . The plot follows the high school student Yū Otosaka, who trains the ability to briefly penetrate other people's bodies and to be able to control them. Through this special ability, he hopes to be able to lead a carefree life, but is soon exposed by Nao Tomori, a girl who is able to make herself invisible for a target she has chosen . She forces Yū to the Hoshinoumi Academy ( 星 ノ 海 学園Hoshinoumi Gakuen , German about "Star Sea Academy ") to change and to join the student council , of which she is chairman. Jōjirō Takajō, a student with the ability to run like lightning, is also a member of the student council. The student council has made it its task to track down children with such special abilities and to protect them from organizations that want to abuse these children for their own purposes. They warn affected children of the very same danger that might await them if they carelessly use their skills in public. This leads the student council to Yusa Nishimori, an idol who is able to communicate as a medium with the souls of the deceased. Her late older sister Misa takes advantage of this to take possession of Yusa. This also gives Yusa her ability to let fire arise with willpower and to control it. Nao manages to get Yusa to switch to her school and join the student council.

Cosplayer as Nao Tomori, 2018.

Yū's younger sister Ayumi also unexpectedly develops an ability that causes objects to collapse near her, causing her death . Yū, who barely survived, isolates himself from the outside world and falls into a deep depression . Nao, who watched him unnoticed after the death of his sister, manages to get him out of his depression and get him to rejoin the student council. At a concert of post-rock band Zhiend , the Nao and Yū visit, this long-repressed memories given to his older brother Shunsuke back, is by its ability to be able in the past to travel. Shunsuke has already used this ability several times to set up the Hoshinoumi Academy and an organization that is researching a vaccine that should protect children from manifesting an ability in the future. However, the repeated use caused this ability to Shunsukes blindness . Shunsuke reveals to his younger brother Yū that the real power of his ability is to neutralize the abilities of other sufferers by taking possession of their bodies. Yū steals Shunsukes ability to travel to the past and prevent the death of his sister by stealing their ability before using them.

A terrorist organization takes Nao and Kumagami, a close friend of Shunsuke and his helpers, hostage and demands that Yūs be surrendered for their release. He plans to rescue them. The plan fails, however, which leads to Kumagami killing and Yū himself being seriously injured. While Yū is recovering from the consequences of the confrontation, he decides, at Nao's suggestion, to visit all those who have special abilities in the world and to absorb their abilities. As he travels the world and absorbs the skills of other children, he gradually loses all memories and self-confidence as his memories mix with those of the children who have already been healed. Still, he manages to neutralize all abilities before collapsing under the load. Shunsuke saves his brother and brings him to Japan . Yū has no memory of his past anymore, but Nao tells him that she has become his girlfriend .

Creation and publication

Conception and development

The creators of Charlotte are Jun Maeda and Na-Ga from the game developer Key . It turns Charlotte for Angel Beats! from 2010 is the second anime series developed and designed by Key. Hironori Toba from Aniplex approached Maeda in 2012 with an offer from the President of PA Works , Kenji Horikawa , to create a new anime series in his studio. Maeda himself was surprised at this fact, as he had not even thought of working with the animation studio again in the future. Horikawa explained that the development team is now able to handle things that were known as Angel Beats! At the time . was not possible. Maeda had not wasted the thought of being involved in the development of another anime series, but said at the same time that he could not refuse Horikawa's offer after mutual discussions. Toba asked Maeda to develop a concept that was as close to the key as possible, whereupon Maeda began to analyze past experiences with the conception of Angel Beats. Using a trial-and-error process, Maeda worked out a possible environment and a plot for the anime series.

Long before working on Charlotte , Maeda had been thinking about a concept for a story about characters with unfinished superpowers. They would have to work together to solve various problems. Maeda submitted three concepts to Toba and asked him which of the three stories he liked the most. After Toba had chosen one of the other stories, Maeda made it clear to him that he wanted to work out the story that Charlotte was to become. While writing the story, Maeda remembered the approach to creating Angel Beats! , but with Charlotte focused more on the behavior of the individual characters. He also reduced the number of protagonists in Charlotte compared to his previous work. Toba felt that Maeda was involved in creating Charlotte from Angel Beats! was influenced.

Maeda saw in the large character pool of Angel Beats! major difficulties, such as overlapping character traits of individual main characters or the forgetting of individual characters in the series. He used these thoughts in grasping the story of Charlotte . It was similar with the development of the character designs by Na-Ga , who also worked for Angel Beats! was involved. At Angel Beats! he was concerned that the designs of various characters in the series were similar, which he took into account when developing the characters for Charlotte . The original design by Jōjirō Takajō was discarded because the design process was too similar to the Angel Beats! -Character Takamatsu performed.

Already in the early phase Maeda decided to want to portray the protagonist Yū as a moreless cheater, since Maeda had never designed such a character. While looking for a title for the anime series, Taisei Nakagawa Maeda suggested one whose abbreviation was "AA". Maeda did not like this idea and chose Charlotte as the title . The title is based on the song of the same name by the Japanese band Art-School .

production

When it was decided who should be on Charlotte's production team , Toba thought it would be better not to hire the same cast who were already on Angel Beats! had contributed. Toba decided to integrate new members into the production team in addition to Maeda , Na-Ga and the animation studio PA Works in order to bring changes to the creative process and to counteract the influence of the previous work. Toba was looking for a director who could handle both the predecessor Angel Beats! as well as being suitable for the new project, and found it in Yoshiyuki Asai . Asai has already been to Angel Beats! Involved in scriptwriting for two episodes of the series. Charlotte is Asai's directorial debut. Toba withdrew his participation in Angel Beats! approach. Toba also said that Asai was someone who could capture both the funny and serious moments of the series. When Horikawa received the unfinished script for the new series, he explained to Maeda that the new series did not have the same claims as its predecessor. His opinion changed for the better when he saw the finished script.

While the script was still in the making, Maeda cut out passages that, after consultation with others, including Na-Ga, appeared unnatural to the series. While writing the script, Maeda realized that Charlotte was an anime series. Toba described Charlotte as Maeda's attempt to write a story that couldn't be turned into a video game. He also said that the conception of the characters, especially the protagonist, was unsuitable for a video game.

Kanami Sekiguchi was appointed character designer after Horikawa ended her work as director of the ninth episode of Angel Beats! had appreciated. Toba noted that he couldn't wait to see how she would implement Na-Gas character designs in the anime. Kazuki Hijagishi was chosen as art director because of his zeal and artistic talent . Satoki Iida became music and sound director and was a proofreader of the script. Iida, who had previously worked with Maeda, was selected for the post because of his good communication with him. When composing the pieces for the fictional idol group How-Low-Hello , Maeda used old pieces that he wrote as a student in the 1990s, but which were not used at the time.

The thirteen episodes of the anime series were broadcast on Japanese television between July 5 and September 27, 2015. Between September 23 of the same year and March 30, 2016, the series was released on seven Blu-rays or DVDs in Japan. reception

In a review on the Anime News Network platform , Gabriella Ekens praised the evocative moments of the series, but also described that problems had arisen, especially when trying to put them in a broader context. She criticized the structure, calling it an inefficient collection of bubbling ideas. She compared this to AnoHana , which gradually resembled Darker than Black . Overall, Charlotte has received praise for being consistently unpredictable, but the series as a whole disappoints. In previous reviews, Ekens attributed exact timing to the series for comedy and argued that it was almost funnier than in Plastic Memories . She expressed that she liked the humor. Chris Beveridge praised the unpredictability and animation in his review on The Fandom Post. Ekens praised PA Works for directing.

In a column on the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper's Mantanweb platform , the series was praised for reaching and addressing a wide range of interested parties from anime fans to the occasional anime viewer. Columnist Ryō Koarai praised the series for seeing the viewer through the protagonist's eyes and sharing his unorthodox methods of harnessing his superpowers. Seiji Nakazawa praised the series for cleaning up Moestereotypes . He wrote that some may find the humor in the series trite, he himself finds it acceptable.
