action

In one future (2077), the nation-states will have amassed such gigantic debts that they will be unable to act. General chaos is the result. Only when a few corporations took over the debt of the states did the situation calm down. In return for their enormous cash payments, the corporations take power. Democratic institutions are being abolished without replacement, civil rights are severely restricted and people from the lower classes of society are being abused as work slaves. The average standard of living of the middle and upper classes has stabilized at a relatively high level, with paramilitary and technically well-equipped police units (“protectors”) ensuring security and order. The ingenious industrial magnate Alec Sadler is leading the way in these developments.

Nevertheless, resistance is forming, which, due to the lack of other options, is increasingly emerging through acts of terrorism. The Liber8 group (pronounced “liberate”) is attracting particular attention. Inspired by Theseus' teachings and led by Kagame, they carry out attacks on the government. In order to shut down the advice of the corporations, a kind of world government , they blow up a skyscraper. A large part of the council dies along with thousands of innocents, but the terrorists fail to achieve their goal of completely wiping out the council. For this act, the members of Liber8 who have since been caught are sentenced to death.

Protector Kiera Cameron, who was involved in the arrest of Kagame, is assigned to oversee the execution. Using a time travel device that came into the possession of the prisoners through unexplained ways, they can escape into the past. The plan was to jump to 2071, six years before the execution. However, there are problems: On the one hand, Kiera comes under the influence of the device and is dragged into the past, on the other hand, all recorded 65 years are moved into a more distant past, the year 2012.

The Liber8 group has no problems with that, they now want to influence the past as a new plan in order to change the future. Kiera wants to stop her and return to her husband and child in the future. She benefits from the fact that her CMR, a kind of mini-computer implanted in the skull, connects to a network. As it turns out, this network is the work of the young Alec Sadler and will play a role comparable to the Internet in the future.

With the help of the gifted hacker Alec, Kiera gains access to the Vancouver Police Department , where she poses as an expert in investigating Liber8, who works for a secret agency. Due to the increasing terrorist activity of the group, Kiera and her new partner Carlos Fonnegra are assigned to a new department to fight against Liber8.

More and more parties emerge who want to assert their interests. So it turns out that Alec Sadler was significantly involved in the future of the Liber8 group's escape. In addition, a certain Mr. Escher and so-called “freelancers” each have their own agenda.

Around Alec's stepbrother Julian, who later became Theseus, a revolutionary movement is forming that increasingly challenges the increasingly powerful corporations and the police who protect them.

To prevent the death of his friend Emily, Alec takes the opportunity to travel back in time for a week. Kiera follows him with the help of the freelancers who turn out to be a kind of temporary police and are guided by a mysterious "traveler" who is said to be hundreds of years from the future. Inadvertently, Alec's action creates an even darker future than the corporate-run society from which Kiera comes. From this bleak future comes the time traveler Tomkin, who is heavily involved in Kellog's career. Alec's second edition, which Emily never had to lose, develops into a technology fanatic who, through clever contractual clauses, joins the company PIRON inherited from Alec's father Escher. In the new timeline, Escher is murdered by Emily on behalf of Kellog. Ultimately, the fanatical Alec can be defeated and is replaced by the "original" one. In the meantime, however, Kellog has arranged for Alec to be expelled.

Tomkin and Kiera believe the bleak future has been prevented, and Tomkin uses a temporal signaling device. In fact, the future is bleak, and apocalyptic soldiers from the year 2038 come through a portal. The former opponents of the Liber8 group are now working hand in hand to counter this new threat. Julian has since given up his radical overthrow plans and works with his half-brother.

Protagonists

Kiera Cameron Kiera is an ex-soldier and policewoman or protector in 2077. Her husband works as a high-level project manager for the SadTech group. You have a young son. Kiera is involved in the arrest of the leader of the Liber8 organization, but cannot prevent an attack on a high-rise building. In order to kill the members of the totalitarian corporate government, the Liber8 fighters blow up the building along with thousands of innocent residents. Kiera, who was present at the failed execution of the Liber8 group, also unintentionally travels into the past. She wants to go back to her time, but doesn't know if that's even possible after both she and the Liber8 group have massively intervened in the course of history. Kiera is determined to stop Liber8. In order to achieve this goal, she will stop at almost nothing. Among other things, she wants to execute Alec's stepbrother Julian, as he later played a key role in building up the Liber8 group as Theseus. With a chip implanted in her skull (CMR - Cellular Memory Review; analogous to cellular memory retrieval ) and her special suit, she has special abilities, among other things, thanks to the pulse rate of her counterpart, she can recognize whether he is lying or make herself invisible with her suit. Alec, who, as it turns out, is the mastermind of a large part of the events, helps her in the present with his case-solving skills.

Alec Sadler Alec is one of the most powerful people in the world in the future. As a true genius, he built up a huge industrial empire: "Sadtech". When the world economy collapsed, he took power with other corporations and provided basic supplies for the population. After that, however, the states' debts to the corporations were so high that they could take over power. The corporations established a totalitarian dictatorship in which most people are fine, but any rebellion is brutally suppressed. This dictatorship is led by a corporate council, chaired by Alec. As such, he has almost unlimited power.

In the course of the second season in particular, it turns out that Alec struggles with his actions. Apparently he leaked the time travel device to the Liber8 people and thus also ensured that his former self got a message to himself via Kiera's computer. Alec had covered this in Kiera's suit in 2077 so that his former self could read it out in the present.

In the present, Alec is a 17 year old nerd who is extremely good at computers. That is why his help for Kiera is often of vital importance. In the finale of the second season he loses his lover. In order to save her, he undertakes a journey through time at the end of the second season.

Carlos Fonnegra Carlos is a police officer in the present. He meets Kiera as soon as she arrives from the future. Thanks to the cover story concocted by Alec, he initially believes her that she works for a secret agency called "Section 6". With Kiera as a partner, he fights the Liber8 group. He eventually becomes suspicious that Kiera is far too often correct with her premonitions and mysterious informants (in reality, knowledge of the past and Alec). Finally, Kiera confesses to him that she comes from the future. Carlos continues to work with her.

However, while Carlos adheres strictly to the morals and laws of the 21st century, Kiera begins to act increasingly ruthless to stop Liber8, which leads to conflict with Carlos.

The factions

Liber8

Liber8 is a group that was formed in the future in response to corporate repressive policies. Their leader is Kagame, who was largely inspired by Theseus.

In order to achieve their goals, the group will stop at nothing. Among other things, she blows up a skyscraper with thousands of innocent residents in order to kill the corporate council (de facto a kind of world government ). They are all caught and are to be executed. With a time travel device that seems to have been leaked to them by Alec Sadler, they manage to escape into the past. There, however, the group splits up. After Kagame's death, the group split into two factions, one of which tries to change history through cooperation with the Mafia and the other with persuasion.

The Movement

The movement is a group of people in the present who oppose corporate power. It is led by Alec's half-brother Julian Randol, who later became Theseus. The members' loyalty to the cause and to Theseus is very high.

The movement has explicitly distanced itself from Liber8. So far it has been working non-violently and is organized underground.

The freelancers

A mysterious group of time-traveling mercenaries. Little is known about their goals. According to Escher, they want “what everyone wants: power”, but they are apparently trying to prevent any manipulation of the timeline and to remove all traces. This goes so far that they kidnap other time travelers and even their corpses.

Small dots can be tattooed between the fingers as identification marks. You have technology from an even later future than Kieras.

Mr. Escher

The opaque Mr. Escher is apparently also a time traveler with almost unlimited resources and access to the highest levels of government.

His goals are in the dark. He claims to be a former freelancer and Alec's father.

With his means he supports the police, which is increasingly becoming his private army - a first look at the dystopian future.

Introduction to each episode

Except in the season premieres and the first season finale, a 32-second introductory story from Kiera's point of view is told as the opening credits for each episode, right before the series title, after the teaser of each episode. The excerpts from earlier episodes that are shown during this period are a little different in the second season.

"2077. My time, my city, my family. When terrorists murdered tens of thousands of innocents, they were sentenced to death, but they had other plans. A time travel device sent us back every 65 years. I want to go back home, but I don't know what my home will be like if history is changed. Your plan is to control and radicalize the present in order to win the future. But they didn't plan one thing: Me! "
