An inscription by Thomas King, a member of the expedition, on a stone in Cushing, the Thomas King Inscription , attests to their arrival.

First settlers settled in 1635, two families and the merchant Richard Foxwell are listed in that year. The area was patented by Samuel Waldo in 1730. In the following years there were attacks by Indians. In one of these attacks during the Seven Years' War , Richard Falley, ancestor of future President Grover Cleveland , was captured by Indians and taken to Montreal. Falley later fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill .

Cushing was organized as a town on January 30, 1789. Previously it was known as the St. George Plantation . The town was named after Thomas Cushing , who was governor of the state of Massachusetts in 1785. After Cushing was organized as a town in 1789, the eastern part split off on the eastern side of the Saint George River in 1803 and the town of St. George was founded. Portions of Warren were added in 1807 and given to Thomaston in 1891. Crotch Island was added by the Town Friendship in 1834. Land was given to Friendship in 1839 and Thomaston in 1909.

Anna Christina Olson , who became known through the painting Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth , later lived in this house . This painting by Wyeth is one of the best known works of 20th century American art.
