Daniel Casimir (* 1967 in Celle ) is a German jazz musician ( alto trombone , composition ).

Live and act

Casimir grew up in a religious family and discovered music in the Baptist Church , where he was engaged in trombone choirs and gospel music . For four years he studied classical trombone with Uwe Dierksen (soloist in Ensemble Modern ), then jazz trombone with Albert Mangelsdorff . At the same time he took lessons in composition and arrangement , especially with Dieter Glawischnig . In 1984 he won the soloist prize at the Lower Saxony jazz competition and in 1985 the composition and orchestra prize with his trio.

His first contacts came through the Franco-German jazz ensemble, in which he played in 1984 under the direction of Albert Mangelsdorff and Jean-François Jenny-Clark with Jean-Marie Machado , Jean-Rémy Guédon , Claus Stötter , Louis Moutin and Matthias Schubert to France. He recorded albums with the salsa band Havana from Hanover in 1985 and 1987.

From 1987 to 1990 Casimir lived in New York to study composition with the contemporary composer Hal Smith and the jazz pianist Kenny Werner at the New School . He also studied trombone with Steve Turre and improvisation with Jim Hall . There he performed with Sahib Shihab , Frank Foster , Lester Bowie , Brad Mehldau , Johnny Colon, the Spindoctors and his own quintet.

After several months in Brazil, he moved to France in 1991, where he lived until 2010. He belonged to Noël Akchoté's unit and played with Trash Corporation and in Le Groove Gang by Julien Lourau (from 1992 to 1998), in Didier Levallet's tentet , Quoi de neuf docteur by Serge Adam and in the Orchester National de Jazz . He founded his own quintet Sound Suggestions (CD 1995) and also played with Dave Liebman , Glenn Ferris , Archie Shepp , Jean-Marc Padovani and Laurent Cugny , Riccardo Del Fra and with Andy Sheppard , France Gall and Matthieu Chedid . He also worked in a duo with Michael Felberbaum, in the Wonder Brass Factory (with Nicolas Genest , Philippe Sellam , François Thuillier and Frank Vaillant ) and in the Thuillier Brass Trio , with whom he released two albums.

Together with Alban Darche , Matthieu Donarian , Jean-Louis Pommier and Sébastien Boisseau , he formed the drum-less quintet Yolk en cuisine , for which he also composed. In 2009 he founded the European TV Brass Trio with François Thuillier and Matthias Schriefl , which presented the CD Wunschklang . In recent years he has also worked in the Mann aus Obst ensemble . He can also be heard on albums by Günther Klatts Elephantrombones , Toufic Farroukh , Camille , Eric Schultz, Laia Genc and Noël Akchoté .

Casimir wrote the music for his project Eros & Thanatos , in which he combined a string quartet and a jazz ensemble (CD of the same name in 2003). He also composed for various ensembles and soloists of classical music and wrote a musical theater piece for children. In addition, he leads improvisation courses and master classes.

Prizes and awards

Casimir won a Victoire de la Musique in 1999 with Julien Lourau's Groove Gang and a Django d'Or with the musician collective Yolk in 2005 .
