Daniel Joseph "Danny" Wilson (born January 1, 1960 in Wigan ) is a former Northern Irish football player and current coach .

Player career

Brighton & Hove Albion (1983-1987)

Danny Wilson spent the first few years of his career at the lower class clubs Wigan Athletic , Bury FC and Chesterfield FC before he was signed on January 24, 1983 by the English first division club Nottingham Forest . Wilson scored one goal in ten Football League First Division league games in 1982-83 . At the beginning of the 1983/84 season he was loaned to third division Scunthorpe United before he left Nottingham on November 30, 1983 and moved to second division Brighton & Hove Albion for £ 100,000 . In the following three and a half years Wilson was an integral part of the team and also distinguished himself with thirty-three goals as a goalscorer.

Luton Town (1987-1990)

After Brighton was relegated from the Second Division in the 1986/87 season , he moved to first division club Luton Town on July 16, 1987 . His new club had established itself in the English House of Lords since its promotion to the First Division in the summer of 1982 and was able to continuously increase its rankings. In his first full first division season Danny Wilson scored eight goals in thirty-eight league games and ended the 1987/88 season with Luton in ninth place. More significant, however, was winning the English League Cup in 1987/88 . In the final, coach Ray Harford's team defeated Arsenal 3-2 in front of 95,732 spectators at Wembley . Danny Wilson had scored the important 2-2 equalizer in the 82nd minute before Brian Stein scored the winning goal shortly before the end of the game. A year later, Wilson moved with his team again in the League Cup final , but this time lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest . In the league, however, things went significantly worse for Danny Wilson's team (37 games / 9 goals) with a just barely relegation. After a relegation achieved only because of the better goal difference in the 1989/90 season , Wilson (35 games / 7 goals) moved to Sheffield Wednesday on August 8, 1990 for £ 200,000 .

Sheffield Wednesday (1990-1993)

Wednesday was relegated to the second division in the previous year due to a goal difference two goals worse than Luton Town, but managed to get promoted again in 1990/91. In addition, the second division moved into the League Cup final in 1991 and defeated the clear favorites Manchester United on April 21, 1991 with a goal from John Sheridan 1-0. In the First Division 1991/92 the promoted to Danny Wilson (36 games / 3 goals) reached third place in the table and thus managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup 1992/93 . Sheffield failed prematurely in international competition, but the team around Chris Woods , Viv Anderson , Chris Waddle and Danny Wilson reached the final of the League Cup 1992/93 . In his fourth appearance in the final, Wilson suffered his second defeat with a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal . For the first time in his career he made it into the final of the FA Cup 1992/93 . In this final, too, the opponent and later title holder was Arsenal FC.

On July 1, 1993, the 33-year-old Danny Wilson changed for the eighth and last time the club and signed a contract with Barnsley FC . After two years in the second division, he ended his playing career in 1995.

Northern Ireland National Team (1986-1992)

After he had not been called up for the Northern Irish squad for the 1986 World Cup , Danny Wilson made his debut on November 12, 1986 for Northern Ireland in a 0-0 qualifying for the 1988 European Championship against Turkey. Northern Ireland missed participation in the following three international tournaments and Danny Wilson played his twenty-fourth and last international match against Scotland on February 19, 1992.

Coaching career

Barnsley FC

After he was brought to Barnsley FC by his former teammate Viv Anderson in 1993 , Danny Wilson replaced him on June 2, 1994 as player-coach. In the 1994/95 season, he led the second division club to sixth place and narrowly missed making the play-offs. After a midfield position in the following year, Wilson Barnsley led 1996/97 as a runner-up for the first time in the club's history in the first division. The first season in the Premier League 1997/98 , however, was the last, because Barnsley FC rose directly from the table penultimate.

Sheffield Wednesday

On July 6, 1998 Danny Wilson took over the coaching post at his ex-club Sheffield Wednesday . With the first division he finished the Premier League in 1998/99 in twelfth place. After the club did not find its way out of the table cellar in the course of the Premier League 1999/2000 , coach Danny Wilson was sacked on March 21, 2000. In January 2000 he was named Premier League coach of the month.

Bristol City

At the beginning of the 2000/01 season he moved to the third division Bristol City . After he missed promotion to the second division with Bristol in four years (2003 and 2004 in the play-offs), his contract was not extended in the summer of 2004.

Milton Keynes Dons

On December 7, 2004 he was the new coach of the third division Milton Keynes Dons and managed with his team to stay in the Football League One . He did not succeed in 2005/06, rather the club rose as third from bottom in the fourth division and then separated from Wilson.

Hartlepool United

On June 13, 2006, he started his next coaching position at Hartlepool United . United was also relegated to Football League Two in the previous year and managed with coach Danny Wilson in 2006/07 as a runner-up behind FC Walsall, the direct return to the third division. After a fifteenth place in the 2007/08 season, an unsatisfactory start to the following season ensured his dismissal on December 15, 2008.

Swindon Town

Just eleven days after his release in Hartlepool, he was introduced as the new coach of Swindon Town and led his team to relegation in League One. In 2009/10 he reached fifth place with Swindon and moved into the final after a success in the first play-off round over Charlton Athletic. This game, however, lost the team at Wembley 0-1 against Millwall FC and missed promotion to the second division. On March 2, 2011, Wilson resigned as coach of Swindon Town.

Sheffield United

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he took over the coaching position at the third division club Sheffield United and finished the Football League One 2011/12 in third place in the table. In the play-off final United failed on penalties at Huddersfield Town and missed the direct return to the second division. On April 10, 2013, the club announced the separation from Danny Wilson. Sheffield United was at the time in fifth place in Football League One 2012/13 .

Barnsley FC

On December 17, 2013 Danny Wilson was introduced as the new coach of the bottom of the second division Barnsley FC . Wilson subsequently failed to lead the club from the relegation places and rose with the team as penultimate. Also in the third highest division, the club was in the lower half of the table and Wilson was dismissed in February 2015 lying in 17th place in the table.

Chesterfield FC

Wilson found a new employer in December 2015 with third division club Chesterfield FC, and he successfully led the relegation-threatened club to relegation in the 2015/16 season. When the club was relegated again at the turn of 2016/2017, Wilson and his assistant coach Chris Morgan were sacked on January 8, 2017.
