David Steven "Dave" Brown (born January 16, 1953 in Akron , Ohio , † January 10, 2006 in Lubbock , Texas ) was an American American football player and coach . He played on the position of cornerbacks 15 years in the National Football League (NFL) and won with the Pittsburgh Steelers to Super Bowl X .

Life

Born in Ohio, Brown began his football career in East High School in Akron and continued it in college football at the University of Michigan . Here he was elected All-American in 1974 and later joined the All-Century Team. In their three years as starters for Michigan, the team won 32 of their 33 games and scored eleven shutouts . He scored nine interceptions and 212 tackles . He was also a successful punt returner ; he carried back 48 punts for 531 yards and three touchdowns .

Brown was selected in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers . As a rookie , he won the Super Bowl with these . At the Steelers he was mainly used as a return specialist . He carried back 22 punts for 217 yards and 6 kickoffs for 126 yards. Due to his limited stakes and an established defensive backfield of the Steelers, he was not selected by the Steelers as one of the 29 protected players in the run-up to the expansion draft of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks . In the 1976 Expansion Draft , he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent eleven seasons. In his first season with the Seahawks, he played in the position of Free Safeties , where he caught four interceptions before moving to the position of the right cornerback in 1977. In 1984 he set an NFL record with two interceptions for touchdowns in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs . Also in 1984 he was appointed to the Pro Bowl . In 1984 and 1985 Brown was elected to the second team All-Pro . With a total of 50 interceptions, he holds a franchise record. He also holds franchise records for interception return yards (653) and interception return touchdowns (5). 1987 Brown was exchanged for the Green Bay Packers and played there for three seasons. In 1990 he missed the entire season due to tendinitis in one of his Achilles tendons. He ended his career after his release in April 1991. He caught a total of 62 interceptions, the seventh most in league history.

From 1992 to 1998 Brown was an assistant coach with the Seahawks. From 2001 he coached the cornerbacks at Texas Tech University . Brown died of a heart attack in Lubbock, Texas, in 2006 , six days before his fifty-third birthday. He left behind his wife Rhonda and two sons.

Awards

Brown played once in the Pro Bowl and he was voted All-Pro twice . In 1992 the Seahawks accepted him into the Seattle Seahawks Ring of Honor . In 2007 he was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
