Dave King (ice hockey coach)

W. David King (born December 22, 1947 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey coach who last coached Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Continental Hockey League .

Trainer

King coached university and junior teams in the Western Hockey League from 1972 . In 1982 he led the Canadian junior national team to the world title. From 1983 to 1992 he coached the Canadian senior national team and won the Izvestia Cup and silver medals at the World Championships in 1989 and 1991 and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville. He then moved to the NHL and coached the Calgary Flames until 1995 . From 1997 to 1999 he was assistant trainer with the Montreal Canadiens , before he was again responsible for the newly founded Columbus Blue Jackets from 2000 to 2003 .

After that, King moved to the German Ice Hockey League for the first time , in which his son Scott King also played, and worked for the Hamburg Freezers until 2005 . In 2005/06 he trained HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League and in 2005 won the Spengler Cup . It was the third win for him, having previously won twice with Team Canada . After an interlude with the Swedish Malmö Redhawks , King returned to Germany in December 2007 for the Adler Mannheim in the DEL , where he replaced Greg Poss . On February 28, 2009 he was released from his coaching position. For the 2009/10 season King took over the post of assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes and acted as such until the end of the following season. He then joined the Coyotes' extended coaching staff as a development coach .

In February 2014, he became head coach at Lokomotive Yaroslavl after Pyotr Vorobyov had resigned for health reasons and looked after the team until the end of the season.

In the run-up to the 2014/15 season , King returned to the Coyotes, who had since been renamed Arizona Coyotes , in an advisory role ( Senior Advisor to Coaching Staff ) . In October 2014 King was again head coach at Yaroslavl to replace the sacked Mike Schmidt . After the season ends , King is slated to return to his old position with the Coyotes.

At the Germany Cup 2016 , King acted as head coach of the Canadian selection. As assistant coach of the Canadian selection, he contributed to winning the Spengler Cup in December 2016 . In December 2017 he was again assistant coach for the Canadian triumph at the Spengler Cup.

Achievements and Awards

Honors

Dave King was awarded the Order of Canada in 1992 . He was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1997 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2001.

Publications

In autumn 2007 the book "King of Russia: A Year in the Russian Super League" was published, written by Dave King and Eric Duhatschek . In the book, King describes his experience as a coach in the Russian Super League at HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
