David Monsalve (born December 21, 1988 in North York , Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian football goalkeeper of Colombian descent.

He has been without a club since August 2017; most recently he played for the Swedish third division team Husqvarna FF .

Both of his parents were born in Medellín , Colombia, which is why Monsalve speaks English and Spanish fluently.

Career

Career start in Toronto

Monsalve, who grew up in North York, a district of Toronto, began his active career as a football player at the age of four and joined the amateur club CS Azzurri , based in the metropolis of Toronto , as a youngster . He finally remained loyal to this until 2006 and then switched as a so-called Injury Relief Player , i.e. a player (mostly a goalkeeper) who takes another player's position due to an injury to Toronto FC . In the MLS franchise, coach Mo Johnston often brought him to the team's substitute goalkeeper.

After the only 18-year-old Monsalve made his team debut on July 25, 2007 in a 2-4 defeat in a friendly against Aston Villa , he made his first professional appearance in the jersey of the Canadian MLS franchise just four days later. He was used for the full game in the 3-0 away defeat against Chicago Fire .

Via FC Dallas to the North York Astros

In the 2007 season, Monsalve was one of six goalkeepers for Toronto FC in the professional squad and was actually used as one of five goalkeepers in a game of the highest North American football league during the season . Furthermore, the young Canadian stood as a regular goalkeeper in the case of the reserve team of the club, which had its game operations in the then still existing MLS Reserve Division . After the release from Toronto FC in mid-July 2008, Monsalve came into the " MLS League-Wide Reserve Goalkeeper Pool ", a "collecting pool" for goalkeepers without employment in an MLS franchise. From the local " waiver list ", similar to the system that is also used in the National Hockey League (NHL), it was accepted by FC Dallas during the 2008 season . There he was then not used in any championship game and had to be satisfied with assignments in the MLS Reserve Division. In the same year, the Colombian goalkeeper was given to the North York Astros , based in his native North York. For the team that played in the Canadian Soccer League , the top division in Canadian football, he was used in six championship games until 2009.

Change to Europe

After a short trial session with the Norwegian club Lillestrøm SK , Monsalve's agents contacted the goalkeeper in February 2009 and said they knew a European club for him. In March 2009, Monsalves signed a contract with the Finnish first division club Inter Turku , where he signed a contract with a three-year term until 2011. The then 20-year-old finally made his debut in the top Finnish league on July 1, 2009, when he played the club's goalkeeper Patrick Bantamoi , who was sent off with red in the previous league game against HJK Helsinki and was therefore suspended Tor replaced. As Monsalve was also sent off the pitch with a red card after 57 minutes of compulsory play by the referee, the third goalkeeper of the team, Eemeli Reponen , had to go into the Finnish professional club's case. For Reponen this was his professional debut; the game against Tampere United was ultimately just lost 3-2. After seven championship appearances in his first season with the new club, appearances in the Finnish Football Cup followed , where he was used in the final, also against Tampere United, among other things. At the end of the game, the team trained by Job Dragtsma won the Finnish Cup for the first time in the club's history with a 2-1 victory. In the league, Monsalve reached fifth place with the team in the final table. The 1.88 m tall goalkeeper was also used in nine championship games of FC Sinimustat , the actual B team of Inter Turku, in the Kakkonen , the third highest Finnish football league.

After a successful season end in 2009, Monsalve started with the team in the 2010 season , where he was used in seven league games until August 2010 and had to leave the field on May 31, 2010 due to injury during a championship appearance. The 21-year-old also played in the 2010 Suomen Cup , where he and the team were eliminated in the quarter-finals against IFK Mariehamn . Then Monsalve sat on the bench in four league games until August 8, 2010 and did so on July 29, 2010 in the 5-1 home defeat in the third qualifying round for the 2010/11 Europa League against KRC Genk . Monsalve was used for the last time in a competitive game of FC Turku in the less significant second leg in Belgium. He played through the full game and lost the game together with his teammate 2: 3. At the end of the 2010 season, the Finnish club separated from the young Canadian, who then went looking for a club. In February 2011 he was brought to North American first division club Toronto FC , with whom he once made his professional debut. At the Canadian MLS franchise, he completed several weeks of trial training and took part in various camps with the team. At the end of January 2011, alongside Eddy Sidra and Gianluca Zavarise, he was one of three Canadian internationals who were registered as auditioners at Toronto FC. In the course of a few weeks, Monsalve was removed from the training or pre-season squad without giving any further reasons.

National team career

Monsalve gained his first international experience in 2004 when he was appointed by U-17 national coach Stephen Hart for the first time in the Canadian U-17 selection for an international youth tournament in Ballymena , Northern Ireland . He made his team debut on May 1, 2004, when he was playing against the country to which he would move around five years later. In the 1: 2 defeat against Finland, the goalkeeper with Colombian roots guarded the goal for the entire duration of the game and was used again during the tournament. At the end of October 2004, there were two more missions against the U-17 national team of El Salvador , with which Monsalve also ended his career as a U-17 national player. In addition, he completed two unofficial U-17 missions in 2005, which he completed against Italian club youth teams at a youth tournament in Italy .

From 2005 he was finally used in the U-20 national team of his home country and made his U-20 national team debut during the Jeux de la Francophonie in Niger in 2005 . He was on December 6, 2005 in the 0: 5 defeat against the junior selection of Cameroon over the entire game between the two posts. After another deployment during the Jeux de la Francophonie, Monsalve was used in another eight friendly international matches until 2007. Under U-20 national coach Dale Mitchell , he took part in the Junior World Cup in 2007 in his own country, where he was not used and the team was eliminated in the group stage of Group A as the bottom of the current competition. In addition, Monsalve played seven more unofficial U-20 internationals for his home country between 2005 and 2007.

After it was used in an unofficial game of the U-23 national team of Canada against a selection team of the soccer team of UC Santa Barbara on March 7, 2008 , it completed its first and to date on March 23, 2008 (status: July 2010) only official U-23 national game in his career. He was in the CONCACAF - qualification matches for the 2008 Olympic Games football tournament used against Guatemala; the game ended in a 0-0 draw. At the beginning of 2010, Monsalve was appointed to the senior national team of his home country by his former youth national team coach Stephen Hart, who has been head coach of the senior national team of Canada since 2009 , mainly because of his good performance in Finland. In the friendly international match against Jamaica on May 31, 2010, Monsalve played through the entire match and thus came to his first senior national team appearance for his home country. The game, which took place in the Jamaican capital Kingston , was lost 0-1.

Game type

The 1.88 m tall Monsalve is a fast, agile and athletic goalkeeper who can catch and fend off both long and short balls without major problems. At a young age, he showed his talent as a safe goalkeeper in the youth field and in the national teams of his home country.
