David Troy Palmer , OAM (born June 28, 1976 in Lithgow , New South Wales ) is a retired Australian squash player .

life and career

David Palmer has been married to Melinda Palmer since 2005 and has two daughters. He lives in Boston , United States .

He began his career in 1995, during which he made 55 finals and won 27 titles on the PSA World Tour . He was able to take over the top of the world rankings twice: From September up to and including December 2001 and again for a month in February 2006. His greatest successes include the two victories at the individual world championships in 2002 and 2006. In addition, there are numerous other titles: In 2000 he won the PSA Super Series Finals . In 2001 and 2003 he was world champion as captain with the Australian national team . He also took part in the World Team Championships in 2007 , 2009 and 2011 . In 2004 he won the mixed world title at the side of compatriot Rachael Grinham . At the Commonwealth Games , Palmer won a total of three gold, two silver and four bronze medals. At the 2006 games in front of his home crowd in Melbourne, he lost to Peter Nicol in the final . At the British Open in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2008 he won a total of four titles. This makes David Palmer one of the most successful squash players in history. At the 2011 World Cup in Rotterdam , David Palmer, nicknamed “the Marine” because of his strong physique, ended his professional career after losing in the quarter-finals to Karim Darwish . In the world rankings he was ninth at this point. Despite this, he took part again in 2013 with the Australian team in the World Cup and in 2014 and 2018 in the Commonwealth Games.

David Palmer had three different coaches during his professional career. He worked with Shaun Moxham from 1999 until his retirement, much of his active career.

After his active career, he founded a coaching academy, which was initially located in Orlando , Florida . In 2016 he became the head coach of Cornell University in Ithaca . He is also a co-owner of the sporting goods manufacturer and retailer Black Knight .
