Press reviews

Dear Desolation was largely perceived positively. Markus Eck wrote for the Sonic Seducer wrote that hardly any other deathcore band manages to convey the attributes of this musical genre as skillfully and homogeneously as Thy Art Is Murder . The musicians continue on this album “their bloody line in the most efficient and blatant way”. Jan Wischkowski from Metal.de is of the opinion that the long-term effect of the album is much longer than on Holy War . There are more and more highlights to be found again. The band's typical combination of Technical Death Metal with massive breakdowns , the typically gloomy setting and the brutal vocals of singer Chris McMahon, as well as the dark-looking guitar solos can be found again on the album. This is what the critic calls The Son of Misery , which Wischkowski believes could have been found on the second album Hate . Manuel Berger makes comparisons to the Polish death metal band Behemoth , but complains that Thy Art Is Murder have a significantly limited compositional vocabulary compared to the Poles. The lack of variety on Dear Desolation is also criticized, which especially comes to the fore if Death Dealers and Fire in the Sky were played directly one after the other. However, according to the reviewer from Laut.de, this hardly disturbs a listener, because the group works on what they dead at the premier class level, so there is hardly a band that is more focused and uncompromising to work, which makes the musicians stand out from the rest of the world Scene stand out.

Timon Krause from the German online metal magazine Powermetal.de sees deathcore due to the "countless interpreters who always sound the same and endless, tired live slaughter." However, it is Thy Art Is Murder who stoically raise the flag of the dying genre high into the sky. The ten songs on Dear Desolation offer little variety, but still manage to show all American colleagues where the hammer hangs. However, the first blast bars in Slaves Beyond Death are reminiscent of Meshuggah and the song Death Dealer seems doomy. In his conclusion, the critic writes that one should stop using deathcore in the same breath as Thy Art Is Murder, since the musicians themselves meanwhile deny the term. Is compared Dear Desolation with Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse and The Black Dahlia Murder , with some one of the mentioned bands are even more varied than Thy Art Is Murder. Philip Zimmermann of FUZE Magazine described Dear Desolation as "a balanced mix" of their last two works Hate and Holy War and described the work as a "wet dream of any deathcore connoisseur." The songs on Dear Desolation all build on each other, so the overall concept of the album seems to be perfectly in tune. In the final sentence of his review, he referred to the work as Jennifer Lawrence among the deathcore albums. Pascal Staub from Stormbringer.at was of the opinion that the musicians could develop and improve their distinctive sound, which he made out in the significantly higher tempo variations and the incorporation of further atmospheric melodic moments, as well as even "fatter breakdown and go-off parts".
